Senior Golf Chair’s Report

I am greatly honoured to be writing my firstly monthly report having been elected Chair of the Seniors at the AGM which took place on 31st October. I have large shoes to fill.

I would like to put on record the thanks of the Seniors in general, and me in particular, for Douglas Millar’s leadership over the last few years. He has welcomed us all with open arms and a ready smile through thick and thin.

He made the Wednesday events all the more enjoyable being so efficiently organised. Fortunately, he will be playing regularly with us for the foreseeable future.

I am pleased to report that Gilbert Ellacombe who plays regularly on Wednesday was elected to the Seniors Golf Committee.

AGM and Seniors Grail

Before the AGM 55 Seniors entered the Grail off a shot gun start. This was very popular as players congregated before the start and afterwards over lunch. Perhaps the excellent camaraderie affected the golf as no one played to their handicap. The winner was John Tyrwhitt with 35 points. The other prize winners were Brian Hall (34 points), Hassan Dajani (34 points), Donald McKenzie (34 points) and Quentin Robey (33 points).

October and November Results

The stress-inducing yellow ball competition was held on 23rd October. Over half the teams managed to hand back their yellow ball on completion of 18 holes. The winning team was Geoff Bradford, Robert Woold and Terry Dillon with 109 points!

The Seniors Roll up – Team Stableford was played in clement conditions on 6 November and the winning team was Terry Dillon, Tim Russell and James Grey with 86 points. The runners up were Peter Rogan, Suresh Vara and Chris Cowan with 78 points. The winners played exceptionally well. Special mention to Tim Russell, just back from playing croquet in the World Championships in the US; he scored 41 points.

On a comparatively bright morning we took part in the Stableford Waltz competition on 13th November. Congratulations to the winners Danny Gesua, Alun Hughes and Ian Taylor-Restell, winning with 72 points. The runners up were Paul Gordon-Brown, Denis Gould and Brian Hall with 71 points.

Order of Merit 2024

This year the most successfully consistent Senior golfer was Chris Cowan. Congratulations Chris.

Forthcoming events

I look forward to seeing many seniors at the Men’s Golf Dinner on 29th November and even more at the Christmas Lunch on 18th December. You will recall that we play 9 holes of four ball better ball before lunch.
