Senior Men’s Golf Chair’s Report

Like most older people, I am obsessed by the weather and this year it seems that we shall forever be disappointed! While the course seems to be able to absorb the quantities of rain falling on it, we are still playing with luxuriant rough which can turn a poor shot into a disastrous one and can cost a player dearly in a competition. This is especially true when the competition being played is a medal which the seniors played on 15th May in the form of our Spring Medal.

Spring Medal

We had a field of 50 players playing in the Seniors’ Spring Medal. Despite the conditions six players scored nett par or better.

The winners were as follows:

1st Alec Lever              nett 68
2nd Mark Tydeman      nett 69
3rd Nigel Brown           nett 70 (countback)
4th Andrew Walker      nett 70
5th John Fookes           nett 71 (countback)
6th Kevin Doyle            nett 71

Andrew Walker also had the distinction of carding the best gross score of 72.  Congratulations to all the winners especially to Alec and Andrew for their great scores.

Team Stableford with Joker

On 22 May we played a team Stableford roll up with each player having a Joker to double their points score on a hole chosen before they played their tee shot. This format depends to a great extent on whether players choose the best hole on which to play their Joker.

A team of four comprising Richard Hinchcliffe, Jitendra Kumar, Nick Pack and Denis Gould had an adjusted score of 79 points. They were followed home by a team of three – Michael Godfrey, Ev Schenk and Graham Towler – who scored 78 points.

May Grail

The month ended as is tradition with the May Grail. A field of 53 competed with many competitors finding the lush rough rather too challenging. Only two entrants played to their handicaps or better. Congratulations to the winners.

1st Alun Hughes – 38 points
2nd Duncan Christie Miller – 36 points
3rd Alec Lever – 35 points (countback)
4th Andrew Pedley – 35 points

June Grail

Because of the works on the course scheduled for early July the June Grail was held in mid-month to enable the July Grail to be held early at the end of June with a reduced field.

Despite benign conditions, scoring was not as good as might have been expected.  The winner with a creditable total of forty stableford point was Peter Sabine.

The full result was:

1st Peter Sabine – 40 Points
2nd Hassan Dajani – 39 Points
3rd Paul Gordon-Brown – 37 Points (countback)
4th Trevor Hearle – 37 Points

Our runner up, Hassan Dajani, is no stranger to winning events at Roehampton Club. Recently he won the over eighties open played at the Club. It never ceases to amaze me that golfers like Hassan and Alec Lever (who came fifth in the Grail) seem to go on winning runs from time to time, taking home multiple prizes.

Seniors Invitation Day

Next week, on 19 June, we have the Seniors Invitation Day. This is an event where we show off the course at Roehampton Club to our friends and guests. The are some generous prizes.  A couple of places remain if Members get in before the weekend. I shall report on this event in the next edition of the Recorder.
