Senior Men’s Golf Chair’s Report

The course has been playing fast and true in the blissful spring weather. The scoring has improved as can be seen in the results.

March and April Results

Simon Lucas has had a splendid month, well done Simon. He won the Grail with 40 points on countback from Bob Storer (40 points). The other prize winners were third John Cardwell with 39 points, fourth Russell Gooding with 37 points (Countback) and fifth Nicholas Brown also with 37 points.

As can be seen from the attached photograph Terry Dillon is pleased to accept congratulations for winning the Senior Winter Eclectic with a nett 56. He won the Towler trophy last year as well. Evert-Johan Schenk with nett 58 (countback) won the second prize with David Paterson with Nett 58 coming third.

On 20th March David Bouch, Duncan Christie-Miller, Brian Hall and Peter Bateman won the Waltz competition with 87 points. The runners up were Bob Storer, Kevin Doyle, Alun Hughes and Donald Mckenzie with 86 points.

On 2nd April we played off the reds for a change. Congratulations to Tim Russell, Peter Ryan-Bell and Paul Roberts winning with 82 points. The runners up were Donald Mckenzie, Giles Clark and Chris Cowan with 80 points.

The following week the joker competition was won by Tim Russell, Michael Godfrey, David Openshaw and Gilbert Ellacombe with 97 points. A very commendable score. Tim Russell leading the way for the second week running. The faster greens no doubt to the liking of his croquet skills. The runners up were Martin Flint, Simon Lucas, Evert-Johan Schenk and Donald Mckenzie with 91 points.

In the Colum Sharkey final Nigel Brown pipped Danny Gesua winning the 17th and 18th to win 2 up after a close match.

Matches have now begun. We were royally entertained at Richmond at the end of March. It was a very close match with 2 matches going to the last putt; in one our putt missed; in the other it was sunk. Congratulations to Paul Roberts and Giles Clark on their debuts who both emerged victorious in their respective matches. Special mention goes to Chris Cowan and Nigel Brown who dovetailed so well that they won on the 12th by a dog licence. The final score was 3-3 as it was this time last year.

Forthcoming events

We will be advertising our Invitation Day on Wednesday 11th June in the next week or so. We are encouraged to invite a senior to play and lunch with us. It is a shot gun start. There will be decent prizes too.

I am pleased to report that there will be a shotgun start for the May Grail. We will arrange for the pre-ordering of sandwiches as we do for the AGM in October.
