Refurbished greens

Like the rest of the golfing community, I was very pleased to get back to playing the greens on the 3rd, 6th, 14th and 15th following the drainage improvements installed since the beginning of July. Playing on Monday, I saw little sign of the works except for the strip surrounding the greens which will require some attention over the coming weeks. Well done to Peter Bradburn and his team for getting the work done – with the help of contractors – in the timescale envisaged.

John Ling Salver

Out on the course on Monday I also saw the Roehampton Club team playing in the John Ling Salver County competition. The team, led by Roy Martin in place of Nigel Brown who was going on holiday, won against Bletchingly by three matches to two. That puts our team into the semi finals. Obviously, the team played well but the highlight was a hole in one on the 17th by John Dawes. The team will now hope to emulate the achievement of two years ago when Roehampton Club brought home the Salver!

Competition results

Since the last Recorder we have played four competitions. On 14th August we played a team Stableford in the format of Step up / Waltz. Congratulations to David Bouch, Bob Storer and David Moss winning the competition on countback with 78 points! The runners up on countback were Raj Vara, Nigel Karmel and Egbert Veldman who also amassed 78 points.

On the following Wednesday, the format was team Stableford with Mulligan. In a relatively small field, the competition was clearly not as fierce as usual as a team of Douglas Millar, Kristoffer Huldt and Faisal Rahmatallah were the winners with a total of 89 points. The runners up were Nicholas Brown, Peter Bateman and Terry Dillon with 87 points.

August Grail

On the last Wednesday of the month, as usual, we played the August Grail. Scoring was complicated by the fact that for qualifying purposes only two holes with temporary greens could be included but we allowed players to play all eighteen. For handicap purposes, on holes 6 and 14, players recorded a nett par score whatever their score on the course. This caused some confusion and Matt Fidler and I had to check the cards carefully, with not all players completing those holes. A field of 55 seniors took part and scoring was generally very good with the players getting full value from drives rolling a considerable distance on the hard fairways.

After rigorous scrutiny of the cards, the winner of the competition and the other prize winners were determined as follows:

1st       John Tyrwhitt                                   41 points (countback)
2nd     John Dawes                                        41 points
3rd      Evert-Johan Schenk                          40 points (countback)
4th      Suresh Vara                                       40 points (countback)
5th      Stephen Jones and Peter Sabine    40 points (same score)

Stableford

Yesterday we played a team Stableford competition with Joker. Each team of three had a joker to double their points on one hole chosen before the players teed off and each individual player had a joker to be played on another hole on the course. 27players took part.

Scoring was again very good, and three of the nine teams tied on 94 points. After exhaustive checks, a team of Michael Godfrey, Andrew Long and David Moss were declared the winners of the competition on countback with 94 points. Well done to them and to the other teams who lost out on countback.

The runners up on countback were Nicholas Brown, Brian Hall and Neil Hempsall also with 94 points. In third place with the same score were Peter Sabine, Bob Storer and David Openshaw.

AGM

The Seniors will play the October Grail on 30th October using a shotgun start. This will enable all of our players to complete their rounds more or less at the same time enabling the AGM to follow at 2pm. It would be good to see as many Seniors as possible signing up to play and attending the AGM afterwards.
