Invitation Day

Our seniors’ invitation day was held successfully on Wednesday 19th June. The weather was benign and the Club was shown off at its best. The course was in magnificent condition and the meal provided by the Club was of the highest standard. We had 66 golfers playing including 31 guests. The format was 4 ball better ball Stableford. It was great to see Mel Davies get a creditable second place in the team competition on his return to the Club. The mechanics of completing the nearest the pin marker on the 13th meant that we were unable to award a members’ prize on that hole. A great day was had by all.

July Grail

Because of the impending works on the course, we held the July grail on Wednesday 26th June to ensure that the complete course was open. Only two of the thirty-seven strong field played to their handicaps. David Todd came in second on 40 points but the winner with a magnificent 41 points was Peter Bateman. Congratulations to Peter and David.

Works on the Course

As you know, for the next two months we will be playing on a course affected by major drainage works to the 3rd, 6th. 14th and 15th holes.

Following Committee approval at the beginning of the year, on Monday 1st July holes 3, 6, 14, 15 will be moved onto temporary greens whilst drainage improvements are made to the greens. This work will improve the drainage, allowing these greens to be more playable throughout the year. During this time, and for up to 8 weeks following the process, these holes will remain on temporary greens.

General Play Scores / Qualifying Cards

Despite the course having four temporary greens, Members are still able to input scorecards for handicap purposes over the summer months. If Members are submitting a qualifying card for handicap purposes, England Golf state that only two temporary greens are allowed to be in place. Members are permitted to input a 16 hole scorecard, with two temporary greens. In addition to this, Members are able to submit an 9 hole card with one temporary green in place.

When submitting a card for handicap purposes, holes 6 and 14 will be out of action. Golfers playing a qualifying card MUST NOT play these holes, but rather walk to the next tee. On your card, please then mark that hole with an NS (not started) which will equate to a nett par being given to you on that hole.

If you are playing social golf or not inputting a card for handicap purposes, you are able to play these holes.

Team Stableford

Yesterday was the last opportunity for two months to complete an eighteen hole card. In recognition of this, our competition on 3rd July was a standard team Stableford, simplifying the process of submitting a qualifying card. The event was also eclectic qualifying. On a day with some intermittent showers , we had a field of 29 entrants.

Congratulations to Duncan Christie-Miller, Mark Tydeman, Simon Duvivier and Terry Dillon who won on countback with a 4-ball adjusted 80 Points. The runners up on countback were a three ball of Trevor Hearle, Chris Cowan and Denis Gould who also scored 80 Points. Well played to the winners. All who participated had the privilege of played on the course in tip top condition.

Other Wednesdays in July and August

While the course is undergoing these improvements, on most Wednesdays we will hold our customary events using the shortened card. It would be fantastic to see a good turnout throughout the summer. No competition will be held on 10th July because only nine holes will be open due to periodic course maintenance.

Best wishes to all for the holiday season.
