Team Stableford competition
This week we played a team stableford competition, using the step up/waltz format – on the first hole only one score counts for the team, on the second two are counted and on the third hole three. This pattern of scoring is repeated for the remainder of the round. Again scoring was not brilliant, but everyone enjoyed playing in pleasant conditions.
The winning team was Nicholas Brown, Jim Kumar and Simon Duvivier with 70 points, closely followed by Clive Nicholson, Bob Storer and Rocky Mowat with 69 points. Congratulations to them all, especially Nicholas Brown who is certainly enjoying a winning streak!
Matches
Our season of matches is now in full swing. Last week we drew our match against Richmond and on Friday we defeated Wimbledon Common comprehensively. That was a particularly satisfying result as Wimbledon Common defeated us home and away last season.
The captain for the day selects the team to play each match. I was disappointed to see that only a bare twelve seniors had offered to play against Royal Mid-Surrey on 22 May. Numbers signing up for matches are down this season, so I suggest that any senior wishing to play for the team get onto IG and declare availability for matches as soon as possible. You may get selected! All matches are in the Club Diary.
John Ling trophy
Our captain, Nigel Brown reports ‘I am sorry to report that we lost the match v RMS Artisans 3-2, with two of our pairs winning easily and in the case of the other three, two losing on the 17th and our top pairing Roy Martin and Frank de Freitas on the 19th to a birdie.
Some of us (your correspondent included) did not have our best game and in particular had problems on their slow and big greens.
Still, we are in the Plate competition, but at the minute I haven’t got any details about that. I will report back when we do.’
Knockouts
In the last fortnight, we have reached deadlines for completion of matches in several of the seniors’ knockout competitions. I would like to encourage all seniors to play their matches within the deadline set down in Intelligent Golf. If they are not concluded by the target date, it may be necessary to draw lots or to get one or other of the players to concede a walkover to ensure later rounds are not delayed. Failure to meet deadlines can lead to subsequent rounds being held up. The fairest way for all is for players to get their matches concluded on time!
Seniors Invitation Day
May I remind seniors that sign up is already open for the Seniors Invitation Day on Wednesday 14 June. This is a great opportunity to invite a friend to see the delights of Roehampton Club golf at first hand. There are also generous prizes for the winning pairs which will be a permanent reminder of success. Sign up at Reception as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
