Senior Men’s Golf Chairman’s Blog

Having not played since our Invitation Day two weeks ago, I was pleased to be back on the course this Wednesday to play in the June Grail. Despite the overcast weather, conditions were favourable for good scoring with a quarter of the field of 53 bettering their handicaps.

June Grail

The results threw up some interesting highlights. Simon Lucas in fifth place put up an excellent defence of the grail trophy that he won in May. Raj Vara could not quite match his excellent score when he won the Salute the Services trophy three weeks ago but came a creditable second with 41 points.

Perhaps the most interesting story involves the winner who has recently retired and is now armed with more time to play and a new set of clubs. Peter Bateman romped home with the splendid total of 45 points.

The official result of the June Grail was:

1st Peter Bateman                              45 points

2nd Raj Vara                                        41 points (countback)

3rd Ken Pratt                                       41 points (countback)

4th David Todd                                    39 points

5th Simon Lucas                                  38 points (countback)

Four other entrants also scored 38 points. Peter had gone before the results were complete, but I hope we can get his photograph holding the Grail trophy for the next edition of the Recorder.

Recent matches

Earlier this week the senior team defeated a visiting team from Coombe Hill by four-and-a-half matches to one and a half. That victory ensures that we still have a favourable balance in our matches this season.

On the subject of matches, we still have a dozen or so matches to play in 2023 and the numbers declaring themselves available for selection for some of the later fixtures are not great. There is a chance for every senior to play at least one match for our team. It is great fun both hosting visiting clubs and also visiting to play on different courses. I hope some more seniors will sign up to give the appointed captains for the day a selection headache.
