Senior Men’s Golf Chairman’s Blog

I have not been able to play golf for three weeks and so I have missed some of the best part of the season. The less hot weather and occasional rain has left the course looking in extremely good condition.

One fixture I was particularly sorry to miss was our annual match against the Roehampton Club Ladies. Without my help, the senior team was able to earn a creditable draw with the ladies, each team winning three matches each, improving on what our team has been able to achieve in the past two years when I have been playing!

There has been some discussion about the condition of the bunkers on the course, probably prompted by the complaints about the raking of the bunkers at Royal Liverpool during the first round of the Open Championship last week. Perhaps the best advice is to follow the winning recipe of Brian Harman, the eventual winner, whose ball only went into bunkers on two occasions during the 72 holes. The quality of the sand matters little if you are playing from above ground!

Last week the seniors played a Texas Scramble for our weekly competition. Congratulations to Paul Gordon-Brown, Brian Hall, and Gilbert Ellacombe, who won with a Nett 55.  The runners up were Nicholas Brown, Ian Taylor-Restell and Chris Cowan who came a close second with a Nett 56.  Congratulations to the prize winners.

July Grail

Yesterday the seniors’ monthly grail competition was played in good conditions and with a field of around 60 players. Surprisingly, scoring was not as good as we have seen recently, with only eight players bettering their handicaps. That makes it all the more creditable that the four players scored 40 points or better.

The winner by three points was Hassan Dajani with 45 points – and Hassan said to me that even with that score, he left several points out on the course. I look forward to playing with him with his reduced handicap after such a stellar performance!

The results were:

1st      Hassan Dajani                      45 points

2nd     John Fooks                           42 points (countback)

3rd     Peter McGovern                 42 points (countback)

4th      Gilbert Ellacombe               40 points

5th      Bengt Grundberg               39 points

Well played to them all.
