Senior Men’s Golf Chairman’s Blog

The Club has hosted several events in the last two weeks, including the Men’s, Ladies’ and Seniors’ Invitation Days and the annual Salute the Services charity event. The course is in such good shape that the participants have been able to play in excellent conditions and the banqueting staff have serviced these events with their usual efficiency.

On 7th June, we played a team Stableford competition with a yellow ball. A different member of the team plays the yellow ball in turn with their total of Stableford points on that hole doubled.

A team of David Moss, Ken Ukoko and Hassan Dajani amassed a grand total of 126 points. Distant runners up – but still well ahead of the rest of the field – was a team of Danny Gesua, Raj Vara and Ian Taylor-Restell with 116 points. Well done to them all.

Raj Vara also distinguished himself in the Salute the Services competition on Monday. He scored a very creditable 46 points to win the Spitfire Trophy. In the interservice competition those representing the Royal Navy won the prize. Our organiser, Duncan Christie-Miller used his customary skills to auction off lots to add to the money raised for PTSD Resolution, the charity dealing with PTSD. Duncan’s old service colleague Jonathan also showed how to advertise on cycling gear in preparation for his planned charity ride around the Shetland Isles. Details of how to donate can be obtained by clicking here.

Incidentally some players were unable to complete their rounds as distant thunder could be heard on the course and the sounding of the klaxon called those still playing to come in. This was particularly disappointing for me as I was on course for my best ever round at Roehampton Club when so rudely interrupted!

The John Ling trophy team lost early on in the competition to RMS Artisans but last week entered the first round of the Salver (Plate) competition The team won their home match against Reigate Hill emphatically by five matches to nil. The regular captain, Nigel Brown was away but he is now actively seeking to raise a team to play Woldingham in the next few weeks.

Finally, I come to our Invitation Day. With a hot sunny day in prospect, full water bottles and sunscreen were the order of the day.  Sixty-eight golfers took part and enjoyed the best conditions that Roehampton Club has to offer.

Congratulations to all the prize winners:

As ever, we were capably assisted by Louis Laville and Matt Fidler. The marshalls led by Dhiren Patel, and Dev from the catering team providing refreshments at the hut at the 7th all contributed to the smooth running of the day.

The catering staff provided an excellent lunch which sent most of us off with a warm glow, not entirely related to the heat of the afternoon.
