Senior Men’s Golf Chairman’s Blog
The pace of golf is beginning to quicken as the weather has improved. The seniors played against Royal Mid Surrey on Monday of last week and recorded a victory by four and a half matches to one and a half. Our visitors remarked favourably on the condition of the course and the post-match hospitality. The win now enables us to show a favourable balance in our record for 2023 which I hope will continue at Leatherhead on Friday!
We had a relatively modest turnout of 20 players for our Wednesday roll up last week, with all those who played enjoying a lovely day on the course playing a team stableford competition with a joker per player. The joker doubles their score on a chosen hole. I had the pleasure of hosting an Australian, Rob MacLean from Sydney whose club enjoys reciprocal rights with Roehampton Club. Perhaps inspired by Rob’s presence, we formed part of the winning team of Douglas Millar, Rob MacLean and Peter Bateman which scored 89 Points! On reflection, it may have been the fact that Peter was using new clubs as much as Rob’s presence that tipped the balance. The runners up were Michael Godfrey, Derek Downham and Adriano Bianchi with 82 Points.
May Grail
After some weeks with more modest entries, the May Grail played yesterday had 60 entrants, 58 of whom completed their rounds. Those of us who started early played in cold and windy conditions as opposed to the late starters who benefitted from warmer and sunnier weather. The benign nature of the course enabled more than a quarter of the field to play to their handicap or better. It was no surprise that the top three were all among those going out later.
