Senior Men’s Golf Blog

There has been quite a bit of activity among seniors on the course after Christmas as Members tried to fulfil their obligations in the winter knockouts interrupted first by snowy and then by wet weather. We also played our December Grail on 4th January, which had been postponed when the course was closed by snow in mid December.

Despite conditions being wet under foot, 39 entrants competed for the Grail. Because the course was shortened by the use of six temporary greens, the event was non qualifying, although scores on individual holes were able to count towards the Winter Eclectic. Some familiar names populated the leader board as five players bettered their handicaps. The winner was Raj Vara with a terrific score of 44 points. As his handicap was not affected, we may well see Raj atop the standings again soon.

The overall results were

Raj Vara                                44 points
John Fooks                          41 points
Nigel Brown                       39 points (countback)
Tim Isaac                             39 points (countback)
Alec Lever                            39 points (countback)

Overall conditions were not very pleasant, but it was good to get a game in early in the new year.

Another competition was held this Wednesday, a Texas scramble. This competition was much lower key as no trophy was involved. Considering the conditions out on the golf course and eight temporary greens, the teams scored very well. The winning team were Anders Grundberg, Stephen Branton-Speak and Stephen Jones with a Nett 61. They were closely followed by the runners up who were Nicholas Brown, Bengt Grundberg and Malcolm Turner with a Nett 62.

I hope to see as many seniors as possible entering the seniors’ Wednesday competitions this year and also joining the senior squad to play in our matches which will begin at the end of March. It is a great opportunity to represent our club during the course of the summer. There are also over eighties and senior mixed matches so there is no excuse for not putting your name forward to play for the club.

Please watch out for the offer to buy the seniors’ kit that Louis and Ricky will be advertising soon.
