Christmas nine holes and lunch

Christmas is fast approaching and I would like to remind senior golfers that we have our annual Christmas 9 holes and lunch on 21st December. As well as the opportunity to enjoy the company of fellow Members, wives and partners at lunch, there will also be prizes awarded for the best pairs in a greensomes competition from the first tee and four ball better ball competition from the tenth. Please sign up early to avoid disappointment!

Checking in with the Starter

A polite reminder that Members should check in with the Starter (or the Sports Shop) before they tee off to ensure that the Club is aware of those who have turned up to play. When Members do not play at their appointed time, this may prevent others from getting out on the course in that slot. The wet weather may have affected some days but we all should be aware that in the limited hours of daylight in the winter, the course is fully booked for most of the day.

Pitch marks

One final point about the weather. We are very grateful to the green staff for enabling us to play when it is very wet under foot. But playing in wet conditions means that the greens are particularly prone to large pitch marks. Please repair these as you go because we will all benefit from a well-maintained course when the weather improves in the spring.

I recently had a golfing holiday in Mauritius where the conditions were excellent. Resuming golf last week I played abysmally when confronted by long rough and no run on the fairways. I am now getting back into winter golf and ready to put in my card after our Grail this week. Doubtless due to the poor weather, our field was reduced to 42 entrants but there was still some great golf played.

Grail

Forty-two cards were submitted and our competition was played in unseasonably fine weather. The course looked magnificent even though conditions were heavy underfoot and the rough was punishing in some places.

Scoring was difficult but we still had six players bettering their handicaps.

The winner with a magnificent total of 40 points was Raj Vara, in second place with 39 points was Ian Taylor-Restell and third on 38 points was Rocky Mowat. Congratulations to all of them and to the three who score 37 points Suresh Vara, Jitendra Kumar and Ev Schenk.

Because of our Christmas event, booking for the December Grail on 14th December is already open. Hope springs eternal so those of us who struggled today have only a fortnight to wait to try to improve on our scores!
