Senior Golf Chair’s Report

I hope that everyone has recovered from the convivial festivities and that the weather is reasonable for golf even if a little chilly. I am thinking of the weather as I am writing the first draft of this report from sunny Perth, West Australia and will finalise it in Rome.

Seniors Christmas Lunch and Competition

We were blessed with unseasonably warm and windy weather on 18th December. We played 9 holes choosing either the front or back nine holes. The scoring was remarkably consistent. Many teams scored 20 points and most scored 17 points or more.

The winners of the front nine were Brian Hall and Andrew Hine with 21 points and on the back nine David and Anne Paterson won with 20 points on countback. David finished with 3 pars – 4, 3, 4. No wonder they won on countback! Simon Culliford and Cathy Staveley won the nearest the pin on the 7th and 13th holes respectively.

Over 75 attended lunch with guests including Simon, Louis and Matt from the Management Team, our Golf Marshall Dirhen, our Head PGA Professional Ricky and Greenkeeper David. I hope that a convivial time was had by all.

January results

On New Year’s Day it was decided that the competition would be just 9 holes, given the horrendous weather forecast, which suited everyone. In the light of the forecast there was a low turnout.

Three ball David Bouch, Martin Waller and Tony Durrant  won the competition with 35 points.

Fifteen Seniors braced the cold on Wednesday 8th January in the Scramble. Gilbert Ellacombe, Terry Dillon and Martin Waller won with a nett 62!

With thanks to Gilbert Ellacombe and Clive Nicholson who looked after the competitions on 1st and 8th January.

On 15th January, in slightly better playing conditions, the Seniors played a 4 clubs and a putter competition. Congratulations to David Paterson, Peter Barrett and Brian Hall winning the competition with 79 points. The runners up were John Cardwell, Russell Gooding and Tim Russell with 75 points.

Forthcoming events

Our matches start in March so it would be most helpful if those who wish to play would set their availability on IG in good time. For some matches last year we had over 20 applicants for places which is very encouraging but it does mean that some are disappointed. If you have a particular reason to play in a specific fixture please do let me know so that I can see if your request can be accommodated. It will soon be possible to order Seniors’ shirts and sweaters. An email will be forthcoming in the next two or three weeks. I do hope those who are selected will wear our smart tops at the matches.
