PhotoClub update

Charles Carne

Last week I sadly sent an email to current PhotoClub class members to advise them that Charles had passed away. Charles, a friendly and humorous man, had an eye for the unusual and quirky images which told a story without the need for words. He will be much missed by his friends and colleagues.

We send our condolences and best wishes to Sally and their family.

The Hatton Garden Heist 2015

Wednesday, 15 February, 2023

Meet at 10:50 outside the Sir John Oldcastle pub, 29-35 Farringdon Road, EC1M 3JF – duration approx. 4 hours.

This walk is being led by Paul Talling of Derelict London. Paul has done a number of walks for us, and they are always interesting. If you are not familiar with Paul, please visit his website www.derelictlondon.com to find out more about him. His walks are always popular and difficult to book, which is why we are so lucky he enjoys giving us private tours. Bringing your camera is optional.

Our tour will concentrate on the Hatton Garden Heist of 2015.

This walk tells the story of one of the most remarkable and lucrative robberies in British history. Analogue criminals in a digital world. The story of an ageing gang of grandads, who nearly got away with it.

This is slightly different to the existing tours as it will focus on the famous Hatton Garden safe deposit burglary of Easter 2015 taking in many sites from before, during and after the heist including the exteriors of the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Company, the lookout post, the alleyway, cafés where the heist was planned and where the guys continued to visit afterwards, the pub where they met after the heist whilst under surveillance plus the house where the wheelie bins full of valuables were kept outside.

Plus many more sites along the way including the general history of the area, some defunct music venues plus plenty of tangents including a couple of nearby locations from Minder and Only Fools and Horses. We wander around Hatton Garden through Clerkenwell to the Angel and finishing up at Shoreditch Park (Old Street Station is a 10-min walk). Robbery aside, this tour gives a fascinating overview of the area.

Cost: £20

The Sir John Oldcastle is a large J D Wetherspoon public house that sells tea and coffee to drink there or takeaway. It also serves a good value breakfast until 11am. Toilets at the pub are available for all. Farringdon Station is a 2-min walk.

If you can join us, please email Laurie Porter at laurie.m.porter@gmail.com

She will confirm your place and direct you how to pay at Reception. This isn’t limited to PhotoCLub members, but they will get priority. You are welcome to bring a friend!
