The Club was very spoilt on 31st October by having Joel Meyerowitz, the celebrated photographer, giving us an illustrated lecture on his life and work.
He was the only photographer who was given unimpeded access to Ground Zero in the wake of 9/11. He explained how he became a street photographer and was influenced by Robert Frank. He learnt the art of making the street photographer become invisible within a crowd.
He was joined on stage by his wife Maggie Barrett, an artist, and the wonderful chemistry between them was obvious to see. They explained their thoughts behind writing their book Tuscany: Inside the Light. He showed many of his beautiful images.
Then Manon and Jacob Perlmutter joined them on stage to tell us about their extraordinary year filming and living with Joel and Maggie in Tuscany. The film will be coming out in London next March.
This lecture was made possible through Art Tutor Kathy Barker’s daughter Manon Ouimet and her husband Jacob. We thank them very sincerely for this wonderful opportunity.
The new term has started with our tutor Nigel Wilson holding morning and afternoon classes. Our first class began with the practice of macro photography. We will be visiting Leadenhall Market and Southwark Cathedral for exercises in leading lines and other interesting techniques.
Nigel completed a five-week phone photography course which was very successful. Follow on courses will be arranged in 2025.
We had a very pleasant visit to the garden of Brian Capstick in October to admire his Japanese Garden with Acers and other trees turning beautiful autumn colours.
We are looking forward to a guided photographic walk led by Andrew Wilson in the Roehampton Club grounds.
There is a visit to Crossness Pumping station planned for 4th December. This was designed by Joseph Bazalgette in a very ornate Victorian style.
