Padel Team Success

Men’s National First Team

The Men’s Team, finished runners-up in the National Finals.
A convincing three wins from three in the group stages saw the team progress to the semi-finals where they beat David Lloyd Bushey.
The final was against Rocks Lane ‘A’ who were pre-tournament favourites. Two very close matches sadly went the way of Rocks Lane but a great achievement from the Men to finish runners up for a second year at the National Finals.

Roehampton Club vs Fitzwilliam LTC

Roehampton Club hosted Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club (LTC) for an exciting three days of padel over 25th – 27th August.

European Seniors Championships

Great news that one of our Members, Sandra Drum, was selected to represent Ireland in last month’s European Seniors FIP (International Padel Federation) Championships in Alicante, Spain. It was an exciting fixture with over 800 players from 18 countries competing.

Sandra joined Roehampton Club in 2021. While on the golf course, she noticed new Padel courts being built and Sandra, who was an experienced tennis player, decided to try this new game. She is delighted she did!

‘What a thrill to play the number one seeds and clear favourites Spain in our first match. They were awesome and I learned a lot in spite of losing’.

Spain, unsurprisingly, went on to sweep the boards in all categories.

Other teams Ireland played included Great Britain, Finland and Germany. ‘We were well beaten by GB and Finland but the match against the Germans was very close losing 7/6, 6/4’.

Sandra really enjoyed the week. It was very positive for Ireland who improved their FIP European classification; the Seniors (over – 40’s, 45’s and 50’s) are now ranked in 12th of 15 and Super Seniors (over -50’s, 55’s, 60’s) 7th of 9.

Team GB Seniors finished 8th of 15 and the Super Seniors 5th of 9.

‘Thank you to Roehampton Club for introducing me to this truly wonderful game’.

Padel Ladies – Surrey League report

In the first half of 2023 Roehampton Club entered the first ever Surrey Club Padel leagues.
Our Men competed in the top ‘Diablo’ league and enjoyed some very competitive matches and notable wins. In the group of six clubs the top two teams qualified for the Finals weekend, sadly we fell just short.

The Ladies Padel team entered the inaugural LTA Padel Leagues playing in the Cobra Division, Captained by Astrid Drayson. After the group stage matches Roehampton Club successfully made the Finals weekend, held at Epsom LTC.

Astrid kindly put together a report from the finals weekend:

‘We enjoyed some fun matches and learned a lot in the process.  After the conclusion of the league stage, we were leading our league having played three matches (won two and draw one), received one walkover and had one match rained off.

We had a number of different players playing for the team – Alex Hince, Anita Sadler, Astrid Drayson, Mikaela Parker, Nicole Huleatt-James, Natalie Lindsay and Penny Yates.

Then ‘Finals Day’ at Epsom on Sunday 21st May.
Unfortunately, we did not have much notice and played in some unknown pairings against Esher.
Astrid and Penny played first and the five-minute warm up was not enough to get us started, losing 6-1 6-1.
Nikki Walker and Sara Levy played the second rubber. These two had never been on court together but gelled really well. It looked like they might be forcing a deciding shoot-out for a while, but ended up with a narrow loss 7-5 6-7 (5-7) 8-10.

The team has enjoyed playing match against other clubs and we are preparing for another league season.’

Court Bookings, no-shows and late cancellations

No-shows are bookings where the Member who booked the court did not check-in within the allowed check-in window.

The MyCourts court booking system allows one no-show before the second triggers a 7-day booking ban, and/or one late-cancellation before the second triggers a 7-day booking ban.

Reminder; please only book a maximum of three 30-minute sessions for your Padel matches.

Padel Success

Mens iPadel league winners!

Roehampton Club Mens squad for the finals weekend:

Craig de Silva (Captain), Nick Yates, George Palmer, Arthur Olney, Jack Hazlewood and Bojan Jelovac.

The first round was against Oxshott 3rd Team. This was a good fixture to start the finals weekend and both Roehampton Club pairs won comfortably.

The quarter final match was against the home side of We are Padel Derby.

Craig and George won fairly easily and then Arthur and Nick had a tough match losing narrowly. This meant the outcome of the match was to be decided on a 10-point tiebreaker with a player from each pair having to play together.

Craig and Arthur played together and didn’t have a good start, going 9-6 down. At this point Roehampton Club was facing elimination from the competition and going home early.

Digging deep, not allowing themselves to make any mistakes and point by point, Craig and Arthur pulled the score back and somehow ended up winning 5 points in a row to take the match and get through to the next round. It was unbelievably nerve-wracking.

The semi final was against Middlesbrough. Both matches were fairly straight forward taking Roehampton Club to the final.

Huddersfield were the opponents for the final. Huddersfield have had Padel courts for over 10 years and so were an experienced team and very strong. Craig and Arthur played first, playing a great first set, winning comfortably and during a close second set one of the opponents became injured. This meant Roehampton Club won the rubber.

Congratulations Laura Deigman

December 2022

More great news as Roehampton Club Member, Laura Deigman, won a Grade 1 Padel event on the weekend of 3/4 December.

Laura and her partner, Aimee Gibson, were playing in Stratford with numerous top female Padel players in the country included in the draw.

Report;

‘It was a great weekend. The first time my partner and I had competed in a grade 1 event (we had played two Grade 3s leading up to it).

In our first round we came up against 2 strong ex tennis players whom we used to compete against as youngsters. Coming through a very fast paced game with a 6-2 7-5 win.

In the quarter final we faced the number 2 seeds from Spain and Greece. This game was a slightly more convincing win with a score 6-0 6-0.

Up next were 2 GB players Lila Simpson and Catherine Rose. Knowing them well from training we had some clear tactics going in and after a long battle we came out on top 10-6 in the third set tie break.

In the final we faced Abigail Tordoff and Lisa Phillips who have been dominating the LTA tour for the last year. Having beaten Tia Norton in the semi final we knew it would be a tough match but we were confident we had the game to win.

After another tough battle we took the win 2-6 6-2 6-3.

It was a great event overall and really positive to see the women’s draw so full.

I am looking forward to competing more and hopefully getting more of the Roehampton ladies involved too.’

Fred Warneryd, playing with fellow Member, Tim Webb, then completed the weekend double by winning the O50s tournament. A round robin format saw Fred and Tim win all four of their matches and without dropping a set.

These results see Craig go to number one in the O40s national rankings, Fred number three and Nick Yates number nine all in the O40s category.

Fred is now national number one in the O50s and Tim Webb is ranked six in the O50s.

This is an amazing achievement and congratulations to all those mentioned.

Padel tennis success and national rankings

I’m delighted to update you on more padel tennis success for some of the older Roehampton Club Members …

Over 19th and 20th November 2022, Roehampton Club Members Craig de Silva and Fred Warneryd won the LTA Padel Seniors Tour O40s tournament held at Rocks Lane Chiswick.

In the final, Andrew Warren (national ranked number one) had a former professional Padel player come over from Spain to play with him. Craig and Fred beat them 6-7, 6-4, 6-4. They were able to isolate Andrew quite a bit and nullify his partner, Alex. A very good win.

This is an amazing achievement and congratulations to all those mentioned.

England Vets in a Six Nations Padel Masters

Tim Webb and Nick Yates represented England Vets in a Six Nations Padel Masters Tournament in Helsinki over the 10th and 11th September weekend.

The other five competing nations were Germany, Switzerland, Estonia, Ireland, and the hosts Finland.

Each country played each other in a round-robin format. Matches consisted of three rubbers and each pairing must have a combined age of 100!

The standard was very high, and England managed to finish fourth. Finland won the event (the host nation often does!) ahead of Estonia and Switzerland. England finished above Germany and Ireland (whom they beat 3-0!).

It was a fun weekend – the tournament was played in a wonderful spirit and, incredibly, there wasn’t a single injury!

It’s great to see Roehampton Club Padel continuing to grow from strength to strength (as highlighted by the men’s iPadel national finals victory in Derby over the weekend) so it is inevitable that the Club will have an even stronger presence in international events going forward.

45s Open
