Padel Success

Mens iPadel league winners!

Roehampton Club Mens squad for the finals weekend:

Craig de Silva (Captain), Nick Yates, George Palmer, Arthur Olney, Jack Hazlewood and Bojan Jelovac.

The first round was against Oxshott 3rd Team. This was a good fixture to start the finals weekend and both Roehampton Club pairs won comfortably.

The quarter final match was against the home side of We are Padel Derby.

Craig and George won fairly easily and then Arthur and Nick had a tough match losing narrowly. This meant the outcome of the match was to be decided on a 10-point tiebreaker with a player from each pair having to play together.

Craig and Arthur played together and didn’t have a good start, going 9-6 down. At this point Roehampton Club was facing elimination from the competition and going home early.

Digging deep, not allowing themselves to make any mistakes and point by point, Craig and Arthur pulled the score back and somehow ended up winning 5 points in a row to take the match and get through to the next round. It was unbelievably nerve-wracking.

The semi final was against Middlesbrough. Both matches were fairly straight forward taking Roehampton Club to the final.

Huddersfield were the opponents for the final. Huddersfield have had Padel courts for over 10 years and so were an experienced team and very strong. Craig and Arthur played first, playing a great first set, winning comfortably and during a close second set one of the opponents became injured. This meant Roehampton Club won the rubber.

Jack and Bojan then played the other pair. They started very slowly with the opposing pair playing some excellent Padel. They lost the first set 6-2 but then fought hard and playing incredibly well and took the second set 6-0. An amazing contrast in set scores. Another tiebreak to decide their tie. The first point was epic with all players playing some amazing shots but Roehampton Club lost that point, and remained behind through the tie-break, narrowly losing it.

The fate of the entire tournament would then come down to a shootout Championship tiebreak with one player from each pair playing in it. Craig and Jack would play together in this. Due to the injury of one of the Huddersfield players, their combination for this shootout meant one of their players was playing on their unnatural side.

Congratulations Laura Deigman

December 2022

More great news as Roehampton Club Member, Laura Deigman, won a Grade 1 Padel event on the weekend of 3/4 December.

Laura and her partner, Aimee Gibson, were playing in Stratford with numerous top female Padel players in the country included in the draw.

Report;

‘It was a great weekend. The first time my partner and I had competed in a grade 1 event (we had played two Grade 3s leading up to it).

In our first round we came up against 2 strong ex tennis players whom we used to compete against as youngsters. Coming through a very fast paced game with a 6-2 7-5 win.

In the quarter final we faced the number 2 seeds from Spain and Greece. This game was a slightly more convincing win with a score 6-0 6-0.

Up next were 2 GB players Lila Simpson and Catherine Rose. Knowing them well from training we had some clear tactics going in and after a long battle we came out on top 10-6 in the third set tie break.

In the final we faced Abigail Tordoff and Lisa Phillips who have been dominating the LTA tour for the last year. Having beaten Tia Norton in the semi final we knew it would be a tough match but we were confident we had the game to win.

After another tough battle we took the win 2-6 6-2 6-3.

It was a great event overall and really positive to see the women’s draw so full.

I am looking forward to competing more and hopefully getting more of the Roehampton ladies involved too.’

Padel tennis success and national rankings

I’m delighted to update you on more padel tennis success for some of the older Roehampton Club Members …

Over 19th and 20th November 2022, Roehampton Club Members Craig de Silva and Fred Warneryd won the LTA Padel Seniors Tour O40s tournament held at Rocks Lane Chiswick.

In the final, Andrew Warren (national ranked number one) had a former professional Padel player come over from Spain to play with him. Craig and Fred beat them 6-7, 6-4, 6-4. They were able to isolate Andrew quite a bit and nullify his partner, Alex. A very good win.

Fred Warneryd, playing with fellow Member, Tim Webb, then completed the weekend double by winning the O50s tournament. A round robin format saw Fred and Tim win all four of their matches and without dropping a set.

These results see Craig go to number one in the O40s national rankings, Fred number three and Nick Yates number nine all in the O40s category.

Fred is now national number one in the O50s and Tim Webb is ranked six in the O50s.

This is an amazing achievement and congratulations to all those mentioned.

Roehampton Club Padel National League Finalists

Over Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th September Roehampton Club competed in Division One of the LTA Padel National Finals. Eight teams were competing for the coveted title and Roehampton Club were drawn with Harbour Club Chelsea, Thistle, and Tennis Word Middlesbrough in the group stage.

Team: Chris Salisbury (Captain), Louie Harris, Frankie Langlan, Adam Knutsson-Sundbald.

The first match began at 10am Saturday and Roehampton Club pairs Chris and Adam took on Harbour Club pair B. This proved to be their toughest group stage opponent but Chris and Adam came through with a 6-4 6-1 win, Louie and Frankie followed with a tight three set win against Harbour Club pair A.

Progressing with 3 wins from 3 in the group stage, next came local rivals Rocks Lane in the semi finals. A good 2-0 win in two tight matches over the all-Spanish team saw Roehampton Club make the final at their first attempt in the competition. The final line up would see them up against reigning champs National Tennis Centre (NTC).

After initially sharing the first two matches, sadly they lost out in a very tense championship tie break decider 13-11 against the current number one ranked player in the UK, Jorge Martinez and his partner Alfonso Patacho.

Chris Salisbury;

‘Overall it was a great weekend with most of the top ranked players in the country competing. It’s always exciting to play a team event and represent your Club with such a strong group of players. Of course it’s really disappointing to be so close and miss out but it makes us more determined to get the win next year. Thank you for all that came to support, it made for a great atmosphere all weekend.’

iPadel National Men’s Summer League Winners

This summer the Men’s Team competed once again in the iPadel summer league.

Winning their local London league meant the team qualified for the National iPadel finals in Derby on Saturday 10th September.

The team for the finals consisted of Jack Hazelwood, Fred Warneryd, Ed Savitt and Oscar Warneryd.

They played Derby, Epsom and Oxshott, including #24 and #32 ranked players in the Country. The team won each match without losing a set, albeit the matches were difficult

Players who have represented the team over the season: Jack Hazelwood, Fred Warneryd, Ed Savitt, Oscar Warneryd, Jorge Alcover, Nick Yates, Arthur Olney, Oli Brookes, Craig de Silva (Captain)

England Vets in a Six Nations Padel Masters

Tim Webb and Nick Yates represented England Vets in a Six Nations Padel Masters Tournament in Helsinki over the 10th and 11th September weekend.

The other five competing nations were Germany, Switzerland, Estonia, Ireland, and the hosts Finland.

Each country played each other in a round-robin format. Matches consisted of three rubbers and each pairing must have a combined age of 100!

The standard was very high, and England managed to finish fourth. Finland won the event (the host nation often does!) ahead of Estonia and Switzerland. England finished above Germany and Ireland (whom they beat 3-0!).

It was a fun weekend – the tournament was played in a wonderful spirit and, incredibly, there wasn’t a single injury!

It’s great to see Roehampton Club Padel continuing to grow from strength to strength (as highlighted by the men’s iPadel national finals victory in Derby over the weekend) so it is inevitable that the Club will have an even stronger presence in international events going forward.

Padel Tennis Club Championships 2022

Saturday 3rd September saw the second annual Padel Club Championship Finals take place. Click here for the final draws.

A large crowd gathered for four closely fought matches, with the wonderful addition of the matches being streamed live for those unable to attend.

The standard of Padel on show for Members and their guests was highly entertaining and those lucky enough to see the matches first hand were also treated to some pizza … no left overs seems to show this was well received!
