Men’s Senior’s Golf Blog

In my report two weeks ago, I mentioned that six greens on the course were going to be drilled and filled to ensure that they remain as playable as possible over the coming winter. The work on the six greens, 1, 4, 7, 8, 10 and 15 was completed on time and, already this week, the greens affected were back in decent playing condition. By the beginning of September, the work should scarcely be noticeable.

Last week, the seniors played a team Stableford competition, with the best two scores in each team of three counting on each hole. Scoring was remarkably good in excellent playing conditions. The scores also counted for those entered in the Seniors Summer eclectic competition.  The winning team was made up of David Openshaw, Ken Pratt and Trevor Hearle who amassed a terrific score of 93 points, an average of more than five points per hole. Also surpassing the five-point average was a team of Raj Vara, Nigel Karmel and Henry Hobson, scoring 91 points.  Congratulations to the winning teams and especially to Nigel Karmel who carded an outstanding 44 points.

As I noted, the scores contributed to the Summer Eclectic. Two more chances to record scores in that competition will be available in the August Grail to be played on Wednesday 30 August and the Autumn Medal on 6th September. I hope as many seniors as possible will sign up for these events. Progress on the Eclectic and the knockout competitions can be followed on the website.

The various summer competitions are also reaching their climax. Most have reached the final stages and in the Super Seniors, for over seventy-fives, Peter Sabine has already won the final.

Talking of the more venerable members of the golfing community, Roehampton Club hosted an open competition for over eighties on 31st July with a somewhat disappointing field of 15 players, ten from Roehampton Club and five from other Surrey Clubs.  The overall winner with 33 Stableford points was, recent Grail winner, Hassan Dajani.  Michael Godfrey was second with 31 points. In third place was the leading visitor, Alan Powell from Royal Mid-Surrey who also scored 31 points as did Peter Sabine who came fourth. The Club has indicated that they are happy to stage the competition next year when I hope we can attract a larger field.

Yesterday we played a team Stableford competition in teams of three. As a change from the usual format, all three scores were counted on holes 1 to 6; only one score was counted on holes 7 to 12 and two out three scores counted on holes 13 to 18. Congratulations to Anders Grundberg, Peter Bateman and Rocky Mowat winning with 82 points.

The runners up were Les Barlow, Jonathan Roe, Julian Bass and Terry Dillon with an adjusted 80 points.

In addition to the results, a huge congratulations to Terry Dillon, making a hole in one on the 7th hole! (pictured below)!
