Senior Golfers’ Report

With the fairways rock hard and the rough in most places easy to navigate, now is the time to put in cards to reduce your handicap – or so I thought!  The premise worked on three successive occasions for me in the last fortnight, but as always luck runs out and my last round was disappointing with a succession of scuffed shots off the tight lies on the fairway and some overhit bunker shots. Overall, I have noticed that scoring in seniors’ events has been extremely good.

We have held two competitions in the last fortnight. Last Wednesday, the seniors played a team Stableford with each player completing a qualifying round. Two thirds of the field played to their handicap or better with nine out of thirty entrants scoring 40 points or better.

Congratulations to Danny Gesua, Ken Pratt and Michael Godfrey, who were the team winners with 97 points and to Bob Anderson, who recorded the best individual score with 46 points.

Yesterday we played another team Stableford, this time with the format of Step up/Waltz. This means that in teams of three on successive holes, one score, then two scores and then three scores are counted.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable morning and there were some excellent scores in the competition. The overall winners, by a wide margin were Nigel Karmel, Martin Waller and Ian Taylor-Restell with 92 points! The runners up were Don McKenzie, David Moss and Ken Pratt.

In the last Recorder I reported that the senior team was having a mixed season. This trend has continued with a heavy defeat to Wimbledon Common followed by a victory over Royal Mid-Surrey. I am hoping for a strong finish to the season.
