Senior Golfers Report

As usual I am starting by catching up with news from previous weeks! The winner of our spring medal on 11th May was not able to be immortalised on camera before the last edition of The Recorder went to press but I am now able to show Tim Frosdick holding his trophy.

No wonder he was smiling. In case news hasn’t reached you, we had some great scoring in this event. Six players were under par in their nett scores and there was some good scoring all round despite the punishing nature of the rough and some rain in late morning. Tim won with a nett 67 and was the best gross scorer carding 79. Congratulations to the four players who broke nett 70 – Tim Frosdick (pictured) with a net 67 winning on count back from Hassan Dajani. Alun Hughes playing despite an injury used a buggy and came in with a nett 68, Ken Pratt was fourth with 69. As far as gross scores were concerned, Tim Frosdick again topped the leaderboard with 79. As overall winner, Tim ceded the gross prize to Peter McGovern who scored 81, playing in the worst conditions of the day. Even those who did not play to their handicaps had an enjoyable on a course in magnificent condition

Does lightning strike twice?

In John Cardwell’s case it does. I have been remiss in not publicising the fact that John scored his second hole in one in the past year in the first round of the Ockleshaw trophy, when he scored a hole in one at the 13th three weeks ago. Not so long ago he aced the 14th. Although I play with him regularly, John hasn’t passed on to me the secret of achieving a hole in one!

Grail 25th May

Having already played the spring medal this month, Seniors yesterday played for the May grail. After two days of rain, the weather was unseasonably cool and blustery and less benign than we have had recently. We had a total of forty seniors compete for the trophy. Due to the winds the scoring was slightly lower than expected but we had a worthy prize winner, Nigel Brown scoring 39 points and winning on countback! Congratulations to Nigel!

Invitation Day 29th June

32 Seniors have already joined up to play in our Invitation Day on 29 June. This means that almost two thirds of our capacity for the shotgun start is already filled. Get in quickly to avoid disappointment! Details of how to enter were sent out again last week.

Mixed PING 4BBB Competition – Wednesday 1st June

Sign up is now open for the Mixed PING 4BBB on 1st June. This will replace the normal seniors golf competition on that day. If you would like to play, but do not have a partner, efforts will be made to help seniors find one. Should you have any questions please get in touch with Louis Laville, louis.laville@roehamptonclub.co.uk

Course etiquette

Attending two of the Clubs’ Golf Committees, I am struck by the number of complaints about breaches of golf etiquette on the course. This amounts to the need to demonstrate the good manners which we should be able to expect from Members of a club like Roehampton Club. A major push has been made to ensure the repair of pitch marks. This has largely been heeded by Members although the dry weather has led to fewer pitch marks being made. Where Members have been remiss is in raking bunkers and replacing divots. We should all leave bunkers and fairways as we would expect to find them. Please do what you can to help.

Pace of play is also a recurring theme. At the very least, groups who are dropping behind those in front of them should offer a faster moving group behind them the opportunity to play through. Having to wait repeatedly on shots undermines concentration and the sense of calm in which we all play our best golf.
