Senior Golfers Report

The extreme heat this week has coincided with course maintenance and so even those playing were restricted to nine holes. I withdrew from my tee time on Monday, but I got back on the course on Wednesday. As we are playing only nine holes, there will be no Seniors’ competition on which to report.

July Grail

Because of course maintenance and its aftermath, we played our July Grail on Wednesday 13th July in almost ideal conditions. The fairways were giving full value to our shots and even the rough was so dry that it played more benignly than on some occasions recently. As a result, twenty out of 52 entrants bettered 36 Stableford points and six players scored forty points or more. As has happened recently, I had the privilege of playing with the eventual winner whose score could easily have been better!

The winner was           John Cardwell 43 points

Second                         Roger Gilbert   42 points

Third                            Don McKenzie 41 points

Fourth                         Michael Godfrey 41 points (countback)

Well played, John.

Another highlight of the day was the hole in one scored at the 14th by David Paterson. He generously put his club card behind the bar but was relieved to find on a hot day most players chose a soft drink. Many congratulations to David.

I haven’t reported for some time on the progress of our Seniors’ team. I share leadership of the team with other Members of the seniors committee and so cannot take all the credit or blame for our record. To date we have played twelve matches, winning six, losing five and halving one.

Our latest match was against the Roehampton Club ladies. As last year the Seniors lost, this time by the margin of four points to two. It was an enjoyable occasion and I hope to persevere till I win a match against our formidable opposition.
