Senior Golfers’ Report

Last week, the seniors played a team Stableford competition, with each player being able to claim a mulligan during their round. With only eighteen entrants, we had just six teams of three players. In benign conditions, two teams scored very well Don McKenzie, Nicholas Brown and David Openshaw scored 95 points, but they were narrowly pipped by a team of David Bouch, Peter Bateman, and Ken Pratt. Well played to all of them.

The August Grail

This week we played for our monthly Stableford competition, the August Grail. 57 seniors entered. The grass having grown a little on the fairways, has reduced the number of bare lies but the rough was still parched and not very punishing. Not surprisingly therefore the scoring was very good, ten participants scoring 40 points or better.

The winners were

1st Alan Thurlow – 46 points
2nd David Moss – 46 points (countback)
3rd Henry Hobson – 44 points
4th David Openshaw – 44 points (countback)
5th Anthony Bagram – 42 points
6th David Palairet – 42 points (countback)
7th Martin Flint – 42 points (countback)

Some significant reductions in handicaps can be expected. Well played especially Alan and David.

Seniors’ matches

The seniors’ team was again in action on Friday of last week when we entertained the RAC. Having been heavily defeated earlier in the season at their course in Epsom, we were pleased to turn the tables by winning 4/2 to 1 1/2. Even more satisfying was the litany of compliments which we received from members of the visiting team about the condition of the course and the generosity of our hospitality. These were the inaugural fixtures against the RAC, but they should continue for some time to come.

Autumn Medal

Next Wednesday we will be playing our Autumn Medal. In addition to the winner receiving a trophy, there will be a trophy for the best score from the Spring and Autumn Medals combined. There remains plenty of room on the start sheet for seniors to enter. It is also a good time to put in cards as the course is playing relatively easily, with half of the field today playing better than their handicap. I hope to see you next week.
