Men’s Golf Captain’s Report

Sunday 2nd April saw the playing of the annual Centenary Putter tournament.  Following the extensive preparations for the Ladies’ Gold Challenge Cup, the course conditions were tough but fair. A cold wind made scoring suitably tricky!

They say, ‘beware the injured golfer’ and that came to mind when seeing Jo Cochrane’s victory in the 2023 Centenary Putter.  Anyone who has played with, seen, or heard Jo will know this is a well-deserved victory after he has struggled with back pain for several years. Jo’s fantastic net 67 (gross 77) gave him a 4-shot victory over Richard C Williams net 71 (gross 79) with Richard Spalding, David Birn and Dominic Guerrini scoring net 72. Scott Stanley (Champion Golfer of the Year ) and Peter Crocombe shared gross score of 72, both playing off +1 handicap.

Congratulations to the thirteen players who made a 2 on a par 3 – and a special ‘tip of the hat’ to Scott Stanley (Champion Golfer of the Year) who made a 2 on the par 4 6th!

I am sad to miss this weekend’s Masters Moneyball event which sounds incredible and looks like it will deliver some really fun golf and enjoyment watching the Masters afterwards.  Bogey is a traditional form of golf – playing handicap matchplay against the course and it usually delivers great scoring.  There are a few spots left so please signup via IntelligentGolf.

Finally, we have several upcoming matches:

Surrey 5s match on Friday 7th April which had to be rearranged when the course was closed on 26th March to protect it. Good luck to Peter McGovern and his team against Addington Palace.

Our team of Simon Butler, Stuart Loggie, Niels Verbeek, David Birn, Peter McGovern, Paul Taylor, Roy Martin, Richard Spalding, Greg Whitaker and Justin Thesiger will play 36 holes of foursomes (a challenge in its own right!).
