Men’s Golf Captain’s Blog

I have been in Ireland over the past couple of weeks where the weather was good, but thankfully we didn’t have to experience 40⁰ temperatures. While I was away, the Club introduced a ban on smoking on the course; please adhere to this rule. I know that a player or two ignored the rule on Sunday morning.

Surrey Golf: John Ling 4BB team

By the time you read this, we will know whether our John Ling team, ably captained by Nigel Brown, will have won their quarter final match away to Dulwich & Sydenham Hill.  I’ve not played there but I understand it’s a tough track, with difficult greens. We wish them well.

England vs Rest of the World

This annual 4BBB match was played last weekend.  We had eight matches (32 players) with 12 countries represented.  The ROW team, captained by Gerry Dennigan, won by a single point – 4½ to 3½.  It was a great to see a good cross-section of Members playing.  These matches are always a good social occasion and an opportunity for Members to get to know others.

Pictured alongside me are Adriano Bianchi, Les West and Shaun Erasmus.

Captain and Pro Challenge Series

I am now in the final furlong of the series, with two matches being played this week, and four more thereafter.  Everyone who has played in this year’s series is eligible to enter the Captain and Pro Challengers Competition on Sunday, 9th October.  Tee-off will be from 8.30am, with coffee and breakfast rolls served from 8.00am, with a sit-down lunch to follow. If you are able to play and are yet to sign up, please email Tristan or Louis.

Hole in One

In my last blog, I reported that Martin Abbott and David Paterson had both holed-in-one.  Rob Findlay has since followed suit – an 8 iron on the 14th.  Amazingly, Neil Anderson was playing with Martin and Rob in successive weeks when they scored their ‘ones’. For Rob, it was also his first hole-in-one, if he doesn’t count a one that he once had with a second ball.

Club Roll-ups

We’ve had two roll-ups since my last blog, and another one is scheduled for this Sunday (7th August), with three more this month.

On 23rd July, Angela Waddingham, playing off 30, won the non-qualifying roll-up with a superb 43 points, with Dante Mama (9) in second with 38 points, and next year’s vice-captain, Peter McGovern (8) in third with 37 points.

On 30th July, Sandy MacCaw won with a great score of 48 points, playing off 24.  In second was Justin Colver (5) with 39 and John Threshie (17) in third with 38 points.

Sign up opens for the Roll Ups, one week before at 07:00 via IntelligentGolf, with random draws being done a few days before the competition. It is a great opportunity to meet and play with Roehampton Club Members.  I would like to see more Members playing in the Club Roll Ups. I would welcome your views on how we can improve Roll Up numbers, that I can share with the Men’s Golf Committee and the Club: please email me on paul@taylorkeogh.com

Reminder: Captain/Past Captains vs the Club

This annual fixture is to be played on 3rd September.  As is tradition, the Club side is captained by next year’s Captain – Simon Butler.  If you would like to be considered for the Club team, please indicate your availability on IG (Matches – Men’s Friendly team) or contact Simon.  It’s 4BBB, followed by lunch.

Happy golfing everyone.
