Men’s Golf Captain’s Blog

We are getting used to musical superstars appearing at Roehampton Club and this continued as I opened the 2022/23 season of ‘Captain and Pro’ to the sight and sound of two of the ‘4 Tops’!

Captain and Pro

Every Captain relates that the Captain and Pro matches are the highlight of the year, and I can now see why. The Captain and Pro series runs throughout the season and sees a ‘challenger’ pair take on the Captain and Pro in a four ball better-ball match.

To the winners, go immense bragging rights and a good donation to the Captain’s Charity, Sport in Mind (https://www.sportinmind.org/).  So it came to pass that Martin Abbott and Keith Atkins threw down the first challenge and what a match it was!  The pair received 13 and 19 shots from Head Pro Ricky Pharo, and they used them brilliantly – delivering 9 nett birdies and were round in +5 gross better-ball.

Sadly, this was just too good for us and it means I must report that the Captain and Pro lost their opening match 2/1.  Congratulations to Keith and Martin for a well played game. I look forward to taking on Danny Gesua and Alec Lever, this Sunday 6th November.

Season Finale

The Season Finale was played in gorgeous weather on Saturday 29th October and the scoring reflected both the weather and the condition of the course, 11 Members bettering their handicaps. David Birn is the Champion with a remarkable gross 65 (6 under par) to score 44 Stableford points from a 2 handicap. This is a well-deserved reflection of the time and effort that Dave puts into his golf as well as serving on the Men’s Golf Committee representing the Scratch Team. In second place was another low handicap player, George Palmer (40 pts) and third Mark Gradwell (39 pts).

The golf season continues this week with a Men’s Stableford on Saturday 5th and a Club Roll Up on 6th November.  A reminder that we have returned to ‘pre-Covid’ Roll up arrangements. These are:

1 Meet in the Club Café from 07:30 and enter via the Roll Up Organiser before the 07:45 cut-off

2 Random draw made at 07:45

3 First tee time at 08:00 from the 1st

The roll ups are a great way to meet the golfing membership so we welcome all golfers with weekend playing rights.

Junior Golf

On Thursday 27th October, Surrey U12’s took on Hampshire U12’s. Roehampton Club Junior Member, Zaal Owen represented the Surrey team and comfortably won his pairs match 6/5.

The Surrey team had a convincing victory over Hampshire. Well done Zaal!
