Men’s Spring Meeting

Many congratulations to the various winners at the Spring Meeting, in particular Craig Wallace who won the net competition score (12 under, playing off 10), and Alex Tonge for winning the Gross (off +1 one, scored 143). We had more than 120 Members playing over the weekend.

The next ‘Major’ competitions are:

June 3rd – Frankland Married/Mixed Foursomes

June 11th – Founders Cup Medal (sign-up opens on Saturday 28th May)

ReGenerate Charity Golf Day

Thanks from Tricia and I to everyone who played last Saturday, in excess of £1300 was raised for ReGenerate.

We were blessed with good weather, and the Ladies’ section swept the board by taking the top three spots. Many congratulations to the winners (with 96 points) – Angela Atkins, Jane Terry, Pip Riddle and Siobain Rolston.

Also, a special thank you to Nikki and her team behind the Bar for looking after us; it was great to see the Members Bar and terrace so full of golfers.

Prostate Cancer Golf Day, June 17th

I mentioned this charity event in my previous blog. If you want to play 72 holes in a day, and raise money for Prostate Cancer UK, by emailing Louis Laville, Golf and Games Assistant, louis.laville@roehamptonclub.co.uk

Surrey County Golf

Our John Ling team (over 55s, 4BBB team competition) are sadly the only Men’s team left in a Surrey County Golf competition, so we have great hopes for Nigel Brown and his team in their match away to Leatherhead on May 31st.

We wish Alex Tonge, Scott Stanley and Max Stanley all the very best as they compete later this week in the Surrey County Championships being played at West Byfleet.

Summer Knockouts

Please ensure that all matches are played by the deadlines given.

Lockwood Foster – second round to be played by 29th May, the third round to be played by 3rd July.

Men’s 4BBB knockout – second round to be played by 5th June.

Mixed Knockout Foursomes – second round to be played by 12th June.

Captain and Pro Challenge Series

I had another close match against Neil Anderson and Graham Terry on May 11th. Playing with Wes in very wet conditions, we won on the last hole to ensure that my unbeaten record still stands. For how long? My next match is against John Randel and Frank de Freitas on Sunday.

There are still a few slots available to play me and one of the Pro team; dates are on the Noticeboard the Locker Room.

Club Roll-ups

Congratulations to Graham Terry who won the Roll-up held on May 22nd, off 9, Graham scored 40 points. Jonathan Reeves (5) was second with 37 points, with James Rowlinson (11) in third with 35 points, on countback over Gerry Dennigan. The next Roll-Up is on June 4th. Please sign up via IG.

Roehampton Club vs Senior Golfers Society

The Senior Golfers’ Society was established in 1926 and Roehampton Club has been playing an annual fixture against them since 1931. The Society’s membership is limited to 750 across the UK and is invitation-only, and generally their golfers are or have been single-figures from some of the very best Clubs in the UK. We played the Society at Woking last year (and lost), and so I was very pleased that, last Friday, we gained revenge with a resounding 9-1 victory.  As is tradition, we played foursomes morning and afternoon. The Society was complementary about every aspect of the Club – the course, the food, our staff, and their opponents.

Golf Committee

The Golf Committee, chaired by Niels Verbeek, met on 17th May. Among the issues discussed were the results of the recent Member Survey, the 10th Tee works, course etiquette (in particular bunker raking – improvement needed and speed of play – we need to be quicker), the current golf arrangements and progress with the proposed Indoor Golf Centre.

With regard to course etiquette, please ensure that you use the divot boxes that are to be found on a number of tees. Apparently, not one of us in the Spring Meeting used the divot boxes on any of the par 3 holes, nor on the 4th. Please do so. And please ensure that you replace your divots on the fairways.

And with regard to ‘no shows’ for tee-times, the Club’s analysis indicates a low number, despite anecdotal comments from Members. However, if any Member is deemed to be missing their tee-times on a regular basis without notifying the Club, tee-time booking rights will be taken away as the Club does for tennis.  Given the pressure on tee-times, it’s not fair to fellow Members. Please take heed.

Men’s Invitation Day, Saturday 28th May

We have a near-full field. As a reminder, arrival for coffee and bacon rolls is at 8am a shotgun start at 9am, 4BBB Stableford with lunch to follow (jackets please, but no ties) and prizes.

Happy golfing everyone.
