Men’s Golf Captain’s Blog

Thankfully the summer has arrived with some great weather; long may it last, so we can fully enjoy what the Club has to offer at this time of year – particularly midweek evening golf, followed by drinks and food on the terrace.  I’m writing this blog whilst I’m on holiday in Greece, so hoping that the weather in SW15 remains good for my return.

As I’ve been away, I’m sorry to have missed playing in the Arthur Clarke Foursomes and presenting the prizes at this weekend’s Club Championships. Vice-Captain Simon Butler will do the honours. Good luck to everyone who’s playing this weekend.

Arthur Clarke Foursomes

Congratulations to William Glassey and Dan Kershaw for taking the honours, winning the competition last weekend with a nett score of 64. Johnny Perkins and Richard B Williams were in second with a nett score of 68, winning on countback against Mark Gradwell and Craig Wallace (third) and Adriano Bianchi and Todd Morgan (fourth).  We had an entry of 18 pairs, significantly lower than in previous years.

One point to note from the competition was that one pair realised after their score had been entered that they had broken a key rule of foursomes: if a player loses his ball off the tee, it must be his partner that must go back to the tee and drive – three off the tee.  In mixed foursomes, the partner must play from the tee which the first drive played. Many thanks to the pair for flagging the error and is a helpful a reminder to everyone; it is important that Members are fully cognisant of the Rules of Golf.

Founders Cup Medal

Well done to Giles O’Flynn, off 7, who topped the leaderboard with a great score of nett 66, with George Palmer (4) shooting a nett 68 in second, beating Nick Yates (11) and Oliver Hunt (11) on countback.  Malcolm Turner (16) won Division Two with a nett 72, and Past Captain Roger Mountney (23) winning Division 3 with a nett 70.

As in previous years, presentations of these two competitions and indeed all the other ‘Majors’ will be made at the Men’s Golf Dinner, that is to be held on Friday, November 18th. Please put the date in your diary now (more details will follow in due course); I’m keen that we have a record attendance this year.

Surrey County Golf

Many congratulations to Pete Crocombe for winning the Surrey Mid-Age Championships at Malden last week, winning by two shots against some of the best golfers in the county. Pete, who plays off 1, shot 1 under with a score of 141 (73/68), beating a golfer from Chobham by two. Peter’s fantastic performance underlines the strength of the Club’s ‘Scratch Squad’. https://www.surreygolf.org/news.php?newsitem=133

The Scratch squad are entered in the South-East League Competition, and last week they hosted and defeated a team from Sundridge Park 4-1. The team was Scott and Max Stanley, Luke Gorman, Connor Hamilton and Callum Hensby. The team are due to play Farleigh at Roehampton Club in their next group match.

Our John Ling team (over 55s, 4BBB team competition), captained by Nigel Brown, will be playing their fourth-round match against Cranleigh Golf and Country Club on Monday, 4 July. We wish them the very best.

Captain and Pro Challenge Series

Ricky and I won our latest match versus David Birn and Adam Musikant, winning by 2 holes. The win was very much thanks to Ricky as I failed to show up for most of the match, waiting until holes 17 and 18 to find some magic. The other guys played great golf throughout.

As I’m away on holiday, Gerry Dennigan and Simon Butler have kindly stepped into my shoes for the two matches that I’m missing – vs Danny Gesua and Graham Post on June 22nd and vs Stuart Loggie and Greg Waunford-Brown on June 26th.

My next match is on June 29th when Will and I play Russell Gooding and his partner (to be advised).

Prostate Cancer Golf Day, June 17th

Eight Members and four members of staff took on 72 holes at Roehampton Club, on Friday 17th June, to raise money for Prostate Cancer. On the hottest day of the year to date, all golfers had an extremely enjoyable day! The group made 97 Birdies and 5 Eagles throughout the day and overall raised £7,500 for Charity!

Captain’s Prize, July 2nd

Entries are now open for this; it’s 4BBB Stableford, shotgun start at 8.30am, with the prizegiving taking place on the terrace immediately afterwards. Your entry fee will go to Regenerate, my chosen charity of the year. As is tradition, I will be serving drinks (alongside my wife Clodagh), at the 7th hole. I hope as many of you as possible can enter.

Golf Committee, June 28th

If there are any matters that you feel should be shared at the forthcoming Committee, please let me know via email – paul@taylorkeogh.com.

Happy golfing everyone.
