Daily Mail Foursomes

I’m sorry to report that Rob Cutler and Nigel Reynolds lost their fifth-round match against a pair from Sand Martins Golf Club, near Wokingham. Their opponents playing off 1 and 4, won 2 and 1. I wish to express my gratitude to Rob and Nigel for representing the Club and getting so far in this famous national competition.

We think the fifth round is the furthest that a Roehampton Club pair has ever got.

Winter Foursomes Final

It’s been quite some time since this competition started but, for various reasons, the final between Miles Otway and Alex Fernandes versus Ben Angood and Niels Verbeek was played only last week. Ben and Niels were victorious, winning on the 19th. Congratulations to Ben and Niels, and for Miles and Alex for reaching the final. As well as winning silverware, Ben and Niels have the opportunity to represent the Club in the Daily Mail Foursomes, if they wish to do so.

Captain and Pro Challenge Series

After losing my previous game to a father and child combination (Russell and Lauren Gooding), I lost my latest match to another family pair – Roger and Ed Mountney.  Playing with Ricky, we lost 2 and 1. Another close match, we all played well but Roger and Ed were the more consistent pair and dovetailed nicely.

My next match is on  3rd August vs Clive Nicholson and Robert Stone. There is a free slot to play me and one of the Pro team on 10th August; sign-up is on the Men’s Noticeboard.

Holes in One

Playing in a friendly fourball last Sunday, Martin Abbott – a past captain and a member of the Golf Committee, had a hole-in-one on the 7th hole. 185 yards to the pin, I’m reliably informed that Martin hit the perfect seven wood. Alas, he and his partner, Neil Anderson, didn’t win their match against Bobby Wilkinson and Graham Terry.

It was Martin’s first-ever hole-in-one.

And David Paterson, playing in The Grail last Wednesday, had a hole-in-one on the 14th hole. Many congratulations.

Pro Day

On 8th July, Ricky and his team hosted their first ‘Pro Day’ at the Club, offering Members a chance to get to know the team better and to win a range of prizes. Unfortunately, l couldn’t play because of work but I was pleased to sound the hooter to start play. Please read Tricia’s blog which carries all the details of the competition. From all accounts, it was a hugely enjoyable event that was well-received by Members; Ricky hopes to run a similar day on a weekend next year.
