Men’s Golf Captain’s Blog

What an amazing start to the year. The Captains’ Drive In was everything I hoped and more. It felt like a ‘Ryder Cup’ attendance at the 1st Tee, doubtless helped by the ‘Ole!’ on each practice swing! I hadn’t quite expected the pressure – it was the first time I’ve worried about an ‘air-shot’ for a very long time. I’m delighted to say that I found the middle of the 1st fairway – certainly my best drive of this season. I am so pleased to be sharing this season with Charlotta Lyckeus as Ladies’ Captain and we have some big plans for mid-summer golf and social events.

My Captains Charity is ‘Sport in Mind’ which transforms the lives and mental health of children and adults through sport and physical activity. Every one of us has felt the impact of mental health issues – either personally or in our family and friends. I will put all my efforts to raising funds for this incredible charity – more exciting plans in planning,

The Captains’ Drive In event was played out on the course and huge congratulations to the winners.

They say ‘Start as you mean to go on’ and the First Team certainly set a high bar for the 2023 season. In this annual fixture, Surrey brought eight of the best Surrey Amateurs to the Club for a scratch match against the Roehampton Club team. After halving the morning foursomes 2-2, the boys bought home the Surrey shield in the afternoon by taking the singles matches 5 ½ – 2 ½.  The course was immaculate and gained huge praise from the visitors who always love visiting Roehampton Club.

It is such an honour to have become Captain and want to take this opportunity to pay tribute to Paul Taylor. Paul has been an exceptional Captain and bought much pleasure to all those he competed against in his Captain Pro series. For the 2023 season I plan to extend the themes set by Paul of inclusiveness, fun and golfing etiquette. The golf Members are a fantastically social section and the camaraderie crosses through both gender and age demographics. The ‘buzz ‘ from all Members in the bar on Saturday afternoon was one I hope to hear and see many times this year.

I look forward to a successful golf season for all of Roehampton Club and finish with a quote from PG Wodehouse ‘A golfer needs a loving wife to whom he can describe the day’s play through the long evening’ – so Liz, get ready to hear about every Captain Pro match I play!

Happy golfing!
