George Gadd Challenge Cup

On what was a very hot day, we had 70 entrants. Many congratulations to Nick Webb (playing off 6, nett 67) winning the George Gadd Junior Trophy and past captain Roger Mountney (handicap 23, nett 64) winning the George Gadd Senior Division.   Michael Lever (10) was runner-up to Nick with a nett 69 on countback to Dante Mama (2). In the Senior Division, Peter Bateman (22) was second with a nett 66, and another past captain, John Urquhart (23), in third with a nett 68.

Surrey Golf: John Ling 4BB team

For those who haven’t heard or seen the notice, our John Ling team were sadly defeated the other week away to Dulwich & Sydenham. The team, captained by Nigel Brown, lost 3-2 in a closely-fought match – two of the losing matches went down the 18th.

On behalf of the Men’s Section, I would like to congratulate Nigel and his squad for getting so far in this Surrey County Golf over-55s fourball better ball competition. Having won the plate competition last year, the squad had a lot to live up to and while defeat is always hard to accept, the squad should be proud of their efforts. A competition of this type is very much a team effort, but I would like to single out John Randel (4 wins) and Keith Atkins (3 wins) for winning all of their matches, and Roy Martin for winning three out of his four matches, and of course to Nigel who was leading the team for the first time this year.  Getting ten people to play on a convenient date, to arrive on time and then deal with last minute illness, injuries and holidays is never easy.

Thank you to all of the squad for representing Roehampton Club. Roll-on 2023. And for those of you entering their 55th year, and who would like to be considered for selection in next year’s competition, please contact Nigel Brown via nak.brown@btinternet.com.  We will say more in a few months’ time.

Captain and Pro Challenge Series

Since my last blog, I have played two further matches. The first, playing with Oscar in his debut match unfortunately in defeat: we were soundly beaten – walloped to be honest – 6&5 by Clive Nicholson and Robert Stone.  The second match against Rob Savage and Marcus Carrigan, was a win for the Captain and Pro by 4&2, with Ricky shooting 5 under.

Oscar and I are playing Danny Gesua and Alex Lever next.

Scratch Team Medal, 6th August

Well done to Charles Bowen-Rayner for winning, shooting a gross 73.  George Palmer was in second (74) and David Birn in third with a 75.

A note to all players with a handicap of 6.1 and below, you are encouraged to play in these ‘scratch team’ competitions. These were re-introduced at the beginning of the year but numbers in recent months have been lower than expected.

Club Roll-ups

On 14th August, Martin Abbott (another past Captain and a member of the Golf Committee) won the Roll-Up with 42 points, with Paul Tustain in second with 37 and Ben Wilson in third with 36 points.

Again the entry for the Roll-up was low, and indeed the Roll-up scheduled for 7th August was cancelled as we had just one Member signed-up. The next Roll-up is on Saturday (20th August); please sign up via IntelligentGolf.

Mixed Foursomes Texas Scramble

Over the past few weeks, the Club has run a few 9-hole mixed competitions on a Wednesday evening. The emphasis has been on the social, as the Club runs a barbecue on Wednesday evenings. That said, last week’s Texas Scramble saw Jo and Justin Thesiger play some fantastic golf to win with a nett 29, with Katy Preston and Greg Whitaker in second with a nett 31.  We have one further Wednesday competition (mixed greensomes) on 24th August– please sign up via IG.

Men’s Competitions

Over the next month, the following competitions are scheduled (details on IG):

◊ Club Roll-up – 20th August
◊ 9 hole Mixed Greensomes – 24th August (evening)
◊ Club Roll-up – 28th August
◊ Bank Holiday Mixed Foursomes – 29th August
◊ Men’s Autumn Meeting – 10th and 11th September
◊ Club Roll-up – 17th September

Happy golfing everyone.
