Men’s Golf Captain’s Blog

With such rotten conditions little competitive golf has taken place – we have been reduced to a golf / curling hybrid that mainly involved scuttling the golf ball along the icy ground and hoping it stopped somewhere in the vicinity of the hole!  I’m sure we all feel a sense of relief that the temperature has today risen a few degrees and given the golf course some respite from the freezing conditions.  At this time I’ll express prior gratitude to those golfers who now remember to replace their divots and repair their pitchmarks.  Having walked the course on Sunday, the frost and ice damage was clearly visible across the greens and we can all play our part in hastening the healing of the course.

On Sunday the Men’s Team took on a team representing Oxford University – the so called ‘Oxford Divots’.  The overall match result was 4-1 to the Club with Dante Mama and George Palmer, Connor Hamilton and Dan Birn, Nick Wells and Brian Crotty and David Birn and Oli Hunt recording wins. Credit to our ‘Celtic Connection’ of Rob Findlay and Wallace Wilson who, while gracefully losing, struck the ball really well.

Planning for the long anticipated ‘indoor golf centre’ continues and last week we were shown the latest plans and visualisations. It is without doubt an exciting plan and will enhance the golfer experience at Roehampton Club when it is completed.

This Saturday we hope to be able to go out and compete in the Club Stableford which is open to all golf Members with weekend playing rights. After two weather cancellations, this Sunday I am looking forward to starting the 2023 Captain and Pro series with Ricky Pharo. We take on Bob Mitchell and Andrew Linford in what will certainly be a competitive game.

Finally, I really encourage everyone to come to the Karl Morris golf quiz and psychology evening that we are hosting on 2nd February.   Karl Morris is the ‘Mind Doctor’ who has performance coached Graeme McDowell, Louis Oosthuizen and Darren Clarke to major championship success.  He has a wealth of ideas to help you get the most from your golf season. I had the pleasure of completing his ‘Mind Factor’ coaching course last November and can confirm that his ideas and thinking can make a genuine difference to your on-course performance.  There are a few places remaining so please contact Reception, Louis – louis.laville@roehamptonclub.co.uk or Matt – matt.fidler@roehamptonclub.co.uk to book.
