Just back from a week in Ireland, currently in a bizarre state of restriction; now the only country in Europe where you can’t simply enter a bar and order a beer. Unless of course if the bar serves food and you pay at least €9 for your meal and you stay for no longer than 105 minutes. Yes really.

This, of course, is because the virus hates Irish cuisine but it can only hold out for 105 minutes before attacking the more languid diner. Unfortunately the virus will instantaneously attack anyone simply consuming a pint of Guinness and snacking on Tayto crisps; who’d have ever envisaged such a scenario ..?

By comparison, the virus despises coffee so it’s quite safe to enter a coffee shop and order just a coffee without even a biscuit to accompany it. The authorities are behaving like it’s the peak of the epidemic though there are just 46 people in hospital for Covid out of a population of 4.9 million …

To more cheery matters, I played my first midweek Captain and Pro match yesterday alongside Will Hancock.

Our opponents were Paul Gordon-Brown and Richard C Williams, both in fine form, as Will and I were to discover! Fast forward 3 hours and we were congratulating the challengers on the 14th green on their fine 5&4 victory featuring top quality ball striking & putting by both.

Coming up this Saturday we have the annual captain and past captains versus the Club-friendly match. Eight matches to play against a very strong Club team. Looking forward to it!

There are now 132 Members signed up for both days of the Autumn Meeting with some Members on a reserve list. Do please withdraw or notify Tristan promptly if you find you are unable to play.

And there’s more, this Sunday I’ll play my first Captain and Pro match with Richard Harrison, with Brian O’Boyle and Chris Goodenough challenging. I’m expecting some top-quality banter, keep enjoying your golf everyone!
