Men’s Golf Blog

We are back on track, Ladies and Gentlemen, with yet another hole-in-one recorded since the last blog! Congratulations to David van der Gaag who aced the 7th on Thursday 13th May; very well done sir. We need one on the 17th guys, please keep working at it. Speaking of working at it, what an achievement by Phil Mickleson in winning the US PGA at 50 years of age …

Where to begin with writing about the Spring Meeting? Lots of good stuff happened! Rob Tansey waited patiently on the reserve list for most of the week, finally got himself a Saturday tee time and returned a fine score of 68 nett for the mid-afternoon clubhouse lead. But, playing in the last group starting off the 10th, Ben Walmsley shot level par gross for a brilliant 65 nett. Playing alongside Ben, last year’s winner Scott Stanley was having a difficult day yet finished just 1 over par gross, having birdied 5 of his last 7 holes, which I think is just amazing. I’m pretty sure as a humble hacker that I’ve had entire seasons where I didn’t even make five birdies in total!

Onwards to Sunday and Rob Tansey continued where he left off with another fine score of 67 nett. But it was to be Ben’s weekend, shooting a solid 69 nett to keep ahead of Rob by one shot. Well deserved congratulations to Ben on his victory, and also to Rob for his impressive golf over the weekend. An honourable mention is also due to Michael Lever finishing in third place overall, and who was on the reserve list even later than Rob Tansey! Congratulations also to Luke Gorman for shooting the best gross score over two days, and on his eagle 2 on the 6th hole. New Member Martin Horswood also eagled the 6th, well done you guys. And, of course, congratulations to all the other prize-winners in this great event.

Next up we have the Founders Cup to be played on Saturday 5th June. It’s not yet fully subscribed, so don’t forget to sign yourself up. Once again, here is the boring but necessary reminder to please withdraw in good time if you are unable to play, and inform Tristan or Louis. Also, if on the day you find you are unable to play please notify the Club as soon as possible and also notify your playing partners. Players not making their tee time without prior notice will receive a letter from the Captain advising they will not be permitted to enter the Arthur Clarke Foursomes on 3rd July.

The sign-up sheet for this season’s Captain and Pro matches will be on the notice board shortly, with various Sunday and Wednesday matches available from June to September. Let’s hope we get some summer conditions to play in, as this is hard to imagine at the moment. I’m looking forward to playing with many of you and maintaining my 100% record alongside Ricky Pharo! Mind you, none of you beat me alongside Richard Harrison either, just saying guys …

So for now, wrap up warm and enjoy golf!
