Ladies’ Golf Blog

I don’t think it was any secret how nervous I was for my tee shot at the Captains’ Drive In!  I so appreciated all the good wishes sent my way, both in person and in messages, and could feel the good will radiating behind me as I stood shakily over my ball.

I did manage to make decent contact, and send the ball airborne onto the fairway, but what I really remember is the cheer that went up from all those lining the tee box. As I said later in the Members Bar, this feeling of friendship and camaraderie is what makes Roehampton Club special, and I feel very proud to be Ladies’ Captain.

A 4BBB competition took place after the Drive-In. New Men’s Captain Paul Taylor and I were joined by our predecessors, Angela and Gerry.  Those three played very well, while I was completely wrecked by the emotion of the day and didn’t manage to contribute much to the team effort.  It was still a jolly event, especially after the rain showers of the morning cleared away, leaving us with intermittent glimpses of the sun.  A large number gathered after the golf had concluded for the prize giving.

There were some great scores posted, but the eventual winners were Daniel and David Birn, Danit’s lovely sons, with 44 points, two points clear of the field.   The Annual Meeting of Golfers was held before the Drive-in. Gerry Dennigan recapped his two years as Men’s Captain, and then handed over to Paul Taylor. Paul will also be supporting Regenerate as his charity, so between the two sections we hope to have a large impact. Niels Verbeek, Golf Committee Chairman provided those in attendance with an update on what the Committee have been and currently are dealing with. Following on, Peter Bradburn gave a very interesting presentation about the course and the grounds.  His work extends beyond daily maintenance to improvement as well as planning for future weather patterns, which will likely be extreme.  The Frankland Moore Married Foursomes (30 August) trophy was awarded to Pippa and Derek Lyons.

Congratulations to Angela Atkins and Emma Angood (pictured right) for winning the Summer 4BBB knockout.  Runners Up were Jo Thesiger and Jenna Archer.

Congratulations to the Pearson Squad, represented by: Sandra Drum, Siobain Rolston, Fiona Pollard, Claire Martin, Bridget Barton, Henrietta O’Shea, Kathleen Bacon and Captain Liz Collins, for their resounding 5/2 victory away at Malden GC.  The weather was particularly bad and apparently several of the greens were flooded, so it was a great effort to bring in this result.

And further congratulations to the Derry Cup team of Jane Peel, Ali Jacobs and Jo Thesiger, who defeated their opponents from Chipstead 3-0.  A special round of applause for Ali, who was called in at 8:20 for an 8:30 tee off!

The Stableford on 26th October left us all in no doubt that winter golf has arrived. The weather was actually fine with plenty of sunshine, but the run has left us completely. It seemed like many of us were struggling, but we could hardly muster excuses after seeing the final scores.  A massive congratulations to the overall winner, Katy Preston, with 44 points.  The full results are as follows:

Silver Division:

1.    Katy Preston (44)

2.    Jo Thesiger (38)

3.    Danit Birn (34)

Bronze division:

1.    Caroline Dewar (34)

2.    Anna Tingle (32)

3.    Susan Major (32)

Finally, the draws have been released for all the winter knockouts. Please contact your opponents to arrange dates for matches. Thursday will become a 2 Ball and Foursomes day, so that may be a good choice.
