Competitions

Pros’ Day

Head Golf Professional Ricky Pharo and his team organised a fantastic ‘Pros’ Day’ competition last Friday.  The format was 4BBB, but there were several additional challenges set up around the course. All par 3s offered a prize for closest to the pin, with the additional opportunity for a prize for those who managed to get closer to the pin than Assistant Pro Sammy Fuller on the 13th and a draw for all competitors who hit the green at all on the 14th.  On the 11th, players had to choose whether they were going to hole out on the red flag on the bottom tier of the green or try for the yellow flag at the top, which was set precariously close to the down slope, but offered double Stableford points for the effort. Finally, there was the straightest drive up the 16th.  All the Pros were stationed around the course, helping with the challenges and just generally being sociable and jolly.

After play, the whole field adjourned to the bar for well-deserved cool drinks. The prize table was fantastic with the top pairs winning golf bags. All players were automatically entered into a random draw for a Bushnell GPS device.

Congratulations to:

  1. Inga Kempton and Jenny Gaskin (48 c/b)
  2. Trish Boyington and Alan Robinson (48)
  3. Caroline Stokes and Gillian Edmonds (47)

A list of all the individual winners can be found on the notice board in the Ladies Locker Room.

Weekend Stableford 9th July

Congratulations to:

  1. Lucinda Cormack (42)
  2. Lorna Robey (38)
  3. Henrietta O’Shea (36)

George Gadd and Granny’s Vase

Congratulations to:

Division 1:

  1. Jane Peel (72 c/b)
  2. Lorna Robey (72)
  3. Danit Birn (76)

Division 2:

  1. Anna Tingle (67)
  2. Sandy MacCaw (68 c/b)
  3. Pippa Walker (68)

Anna Tingle wins the Ladies’ George Gadd Trophy and Jane Peel retains the Granny’s Vase for another year.

A special thank you to Head Marshall Dhiren, who on top of his other duties, was racing around the course with a cooler, making sure everyone could top up their water bottles and stay hydrated in the extreme heat.

Success for Annabell Fuller

A huge congratulations to Annabell, who won the Hungarian Open at the very challenging championship course at Zala Springs Golf Resort. All three of her rounds were under par, with scores of 70, 71 and 69, resulting in a 12-shot lead over the runner-up. Annabell said it was particularly special to win in a part of the world where she spent many happy summers, and to have her mother on her bag and her grandparents inside the ropes cheering her on.

Captain and Pro Challenge Match

I partnered with Joe Parsons for a most enjoyable Captain and Pro match against Caroline Leslie and Christina O’Connell last Monday. We teed off at 2pm and the heat was fierce, barely cooling off as it the afternoon wore on. The first six holes were won or halved in pars, with neither side able to get a foothold for most of the round. The challengers got their noses ahead on the penultimate hole, with Joe and I only manage a half on the last, handing me a narrow defeat.  I will therefore be making the contribution to Regenerate.

Pearson Squad

The Pearson squad head to Prince’s Golf Club in Sandwich, Kent to play the finals of the Pearson Trophy. As winners in Surrey, they will face clubs from Kent, Middlesex and Hertfordshire. The entire Ladies’ Section wishes them the best of luck

Corrections

I do my best with my Recorder pieces, but sometimes things slip through. My sincere apologies to Jane Peel, for inadvertently adding twenty shots to her winning score at the Ladies’ Club Championships! She finished with an amazing 163 shots over the two rounds.

Further apologies to Ellie Elliot, who was not mentioned as part of the second-place team at the Away Day at Berkhamsted.

Rules for Foursomes

The specific provisions for a game of foursomes can be found in Rule 22, but below please find some of the common questions that arise in a game or match:

  1. Either partner may take any allowed action for her side before a stroke is made, such as to mark the spot of the ball and lift, replace, drop and place the ball, no matter which partner’s turn it is to play next for the side;
  2. The players must alternate strokes, however, note that:
    1. If a stoke is cancelled or otherwise does not count under any Rule, the same partner who made the stroke must make the next stroke for the side (g., if the player teed off from the wrong spot in a match, and the opponents asked for the stroke to be taken again, the same player would still tee off)
    2. If the side decides to play a provisional ball, it must be played by the partner whose turn it is to play the side’s NEXT stroke (g., if player A thinks her drive might have gone out of bounds, it is player B who hits the provisional)
    3. Any penalty strokes for the side do NOT affect the partner’s alternation order of play
  3. If the partners play in the wrong order, they incur the general penalty (two-stroke penalty or loss of hole in match play) and the side must correct the mistake:
    1. The right partner must make a stroke from where the side made the first stroke in the wrong order
    2. The stroke made in the wrong order and anymore strokes before the mistake is corrected do not count
    3. If the side does not correct the mistake before beginning another hole, they are disqualified
