Spring Meeting

In a break from the heavy rain most of the field managed to get round in the dry however we must thank Tristan and Louis for their heroic efforts after a torrential thunderstorm in the afternoon to enable the end of the field to complete their rounds. I gather it took an hour to squeegee the last five greens and an equally heroic effort for those who went back out to complete their rounds.

The course was not easy with thick, wet grabby rough and greens affected by the adverse April and May weather with no growth to dispel the effects of course maintenance done over a month ago.

Centenary Bowl

Heather, Danit and Debs played the first round away to Addington Palace against tough opponents. Despite Debs holing a shot from the fairway for an eagle they came up against tough opposition going down 2/1.  However, the team of Caroline, Debs and Danit won the return leg of the match 3-0 last Sunday with the match being played in horrendous conditions. Caroline won her match on the 20th. We await our opponents in the next round.

Wallis Trophy

The team of Lou Tierney, Henrietta O’Shea and Jenny Carter played their first-round match against Banstead Downs away on Monday.

Hicks Trophy

Good luck to the team of Jo Thesiger, Lorna Robey and Jane Peel who are playing their first match at home on Saturday 29th May against St George’s Hill.

Senior Mixed Matches

Libby Dand (the organiser for the ladies’ half of the Senior Mixed Matches), Caroline Leslie, Carol Wright, Siobain Rolston, Sue Latham and Gunilla Huldt played away to Strawberry Hill on 19th May and managed a draw with their mixed partners. Next up is Combe Hill. They are open to anyone over 55, if you are interested please sign up on IG under ‘competitions’.

General information

The Golf Committee has agreed to maintain two 9-hole days a week until the end of June in an effort to accommodate as many golfers as possible. We have in the past year gone from 30,000 rounds per year to 50,000.  Owing to these figures it is not possible to have a ladies’ competition every Tuesday despite the diary for May/June appearing to the contrary.  I know a number of you would like random draw competitions therefore, a compromise of random roll-up dates across all the sections will be coming out soon, please look out for them.

Be prepared, it is not foreseen that the rest of 2021 will get back to a normal calendar.

Anyone who bought Mulligans for the cancelled Christmas competition and wishes the money repaid please contact Louis Laville at louis.laville@roehamptonclub.co.uk. I know several of you kindly emailed me to donate the money to the Captain’s Charity for which, many thanks.
