GANT Championships Review
The last weekend of June saw the Club play host to the GANT Championships. Built on the history of the popular Roehampton Cup in the late 90’s, this new intimate pre-Wimbledon international tennis event attracted the world’s top players over three days, 28 – 30th June. The GANT Championships showcased some of the top leading stars of today and tomorrow with the likes of Fernando Verdasco and Frances Tiafoe, the charming Richard Gasquet and the 6ft 11” Ivo Karlovic, playing in an exciting Now vs Next with the tournament finally being won by Verdasco.
Play took place on one of our pristinely prepared grass courts with spectators watching from specially built grandstand seats and ball boys and girls chosen for their skills from our own Junior Members. On court presenting was provided by our very own Paul Mendelson and all the matches were streamed live on Facebook with commentary by comedian and tennis aficionado Tony Hawks. Between matches Members and their guests enjoyed Pimm’s from the Tipple Van and other courtside refreshments. GANT, sponsors of the event, provided a fun pop up photo-booth and their Piazza shop proved popular with all. For those who wanted to make a day of it, special lunches were put on for Members and their guests in the Clubhouse.
The buzz of excitement around the Club was tangible and both Members and players enjoyed the relaxed and friendly atmosphere it brought. We hope that it will become an annual fixture at the Club and would like to thank the Members for their support of this exciting and prestigious event.
Watch Fernando Verdasco v Makenzie McDonald on the third day of the event here. Every match is still available to watch on the GANT Facebook page.
