Chief Executive’s Message

Dear Member

I am pleased to report that the Club escaped unscathed during the recent very hot temperatures and I would like to thank all Members who refrained from smoking on the golf course to minimise the very real threat risk of fire (smoking ban remains in place until further notice) plus those who kept out of the heat so we didn’t have any casualties on-site. Besides the challenge of the heat, we are still, however, constantly battling against Covid in different areas.

Food and Beverage

We have had several staff absent from work suffering from Covid as the latest variant is claiming victims. We have resulting staff shortages in the Food and Beverage and Health Club departments which impacts the day-to-day operation.

Therefore we have decided to close the Piazza Coffee Shop until September so we can assign staff to the busy outlets in the Juice Bar and Club Café. Grab-and-go refreshments will be available from 7.30am in the Juice Bar and from 8am in the Club Cafe.

The good news is we have extended the opening hours of the ever-popular pizza outlet at the Outdoor Pool have introduced a new range of boxed salads and Executive Chef Lloyd has introduced a new seasonal Restaurant menu, please click here for more details.

Devonshire Cup Retained

Congratulations to our team of four, Malcolm Bricknell (Captain), Philip Howard, Peter Bonor-Morris, and Ralph Evers, who retained the Devonshire Cup against the RAC Club in the final of a very high-standard competition. Click here to read Malcolm’s report.

Croquet Teams riding high

All of our croquet teams are winning through the rounds in various regional and national competitions, showing the strength in depth we now have with the competitive Roehampton Club spirit showing through. It was notable at the elite level that two of the semi-finalists in the recent British Open at Hurlingham Club were Roehampton Club Members – Our number one player and England International Harry Fisher and Great of the Game Reg Bamford who I saw practising here recently late one night to hone his game. Reg just lost in the final and is now looking to win the World Championship once more.

Last evening (Wednesday 20th July, at Hurlingham), in the Association Croquet National Interclub Championship Roehampton Club defeated Hurlingham 4-2 in the semi-final. Congratulations to the Roehampton Club team on reaching the final.

Junior Golf Academy

The ever popular Junior golf lesson programme with Jake Watson starts again in September but you will need to book your place now. Lessons for ages 5 – 9 and over 10 year olds are available. Click here for details.

Congratulations to Ricky Pharo and the Pro Shop team for the very successful Pros Day held recently where Members have given good feedback on the excellent service given by the whole Sports Shop team.

Roehampton Club Staff

Finally, I would like to pay tribute to all the staff, working tirelessly here in often very challenging conditions weather-wise to deliver the best service. Whether it’s keeping everything watered outside, lifeguarding the pools, cooking and serving burgers, pizzas, and coffees, answering the phones, checking your tee or court time, helping you to park your car, checking in guests, giving you a lesson or a treatment, taking a class, organising your event or match, administering first aid, sending out the comms, sorting out your membership query, or generally welcoming you each day with a smile they are all dedicated to making Roehampton Club the best it can be. Please, therefore, be courteous and respectful to all staff at all times – I think they deserve it.

Best wishes,

Marc,
