Bridge Duplicate Survey

Thank you to all who responded to the recent survey and for the suggestions and ideas that were put forward. The results of the three questions are given below.

Q1. Changing the Wednesday Duplicate start time.

44% showed a preference for starting at the earlier time of 7pm. Only 6% preferred to keep to 7.30pm. (The remainder either didn’t mind or don’t play on a Wednesday).

We will consider trialling a 7pm Wednesday start time.

Q.2. Thursday Duplicate – Gentle or Social?

57% said leave the session as it is. 43% said return to Gentle Duplicate format.

We will give this some thought.

Q.3. Would you be interested in playing in a beginners duplicate first Thursday of each month with guidance available?

Only 23% answered yes to this question. The remainder were either No or N/A. But of those that did answer yes, 58% said they would be keen to play with an experienced volunteer for some sessions.

We will look at organising sessions for beginners to play with an experienced volunteer.

Some examples of the free text comments: –

  • Consider a Friday morning supervised duplicate (to replace Paul’s session)
  • A WhatsApp group for new members to find partners
  • A Bridge session at the weekend
  • The pace of play on a Thursday is too fast – The pace on a Thursday is too slow!
  • Too many Howell movements. (B. Unfortunately, Howell movements need to be used when there are too few tables in play. A Howell movement ensures that players do not meet the same hands twice, and preferable that they do not meet the same opponents twice).

We will be reviewing these results along with the ‘free text’ comments to consider which

suggestions we might take forward. No changes will be made until after the AGM (17th October) when the new committee is in place to discuss any new initiatives.

Golf/Bridge Match vs Royal Mid Surrey: 21st September

This was a very closely fought match.  Roehampton Club won the golf by 9 points to 3, but lost the bridge by 4 points to 8, making an overall win by 13 points to 11. Particularly gratifying was that the more experienced bridge players did badly and were rescued by some excellent play from the less experienced players! (Danny Gesua).

Congratulations to the following: – Danny and Sally Gesua, Sandra and Gordon Fox, Pippa Lyons and Simon Lucas, John Fooks and Neil Anderson.

Roehampton Club Golf and Bridge Day: 26th September

We were blessed with good weather and a golf course in excellent condition. Angie and Keith Atkins won the golf section with an excellent score of 43 Stableford points (converted to a 60.0% percentage).  Corinna and Ralph Evers shared the honours with Sally and Danny Gesua with a bridge score of 62.70%. Sally and Danny won the combined competition with a total percentage pf 117%, with Corinna and Ralph Evers in second place on 111%,

It was particularly pleasing that several inexperienced bridge players participated in this event.

Thanks are due to Simon Lucas for organising the day and Steve Foster for directing the bridge. (DG)

MCC Mixed Swiss Teams Competition – Sunday 9th October

The MCC have opened out this competition to additional Roehampton Club teams.

Each team of four must comprise at least one gentleman and at least one lady. The event is designed for amateur club players, not international experts and those who play at the very highest levels. The organisers reserve the right to challenge the composition of teams with players who do not meet these criteria.

Play will start promptly at 11.15 and the aim is to finish by 17.30. There will be a break for lunch around 14.00. The teams will play 6 x 7-board matches in two sessions and the event will be in Swiss format. Only conventions commonly used in most duplicate bridge clubs may be used.

The entrance fee is £140 per team, and this includes a sandwich lunch followed by cakes or fruit salad and tea and coffee throughout the day. Other drinks will be available to purchase in the Long Room Bar. For those who would like to take part, a tour of the Ground is also included, and this will start at 09.30.
