As July approaches and the hot, sunny weather continues, the Club in general seems to be quieter but bridge continues with our regular Duplicates and Chicago sessions throughout the year.
Match vs Hurlingham
The match vs Hurlingham on 20th June at home resulted in a strong 63 imp win for Roehampton Club. As usual when playing against our friends from Hurlingham, it was played in the spirit of friendliness and good humour.
Congratulations to Ellie Elliott (captain), Pippa Lyons, Belinda Stone, Val Lanceley, Marion Kreling, Rita Gallinari- Jones and Julie Bacon.

Tim Chanter
As mentioned in the last blog, Tim Chanter our excellent bridge teacher who has provided bridge classes at Roehampton Club for the last seven years, has informed us that regretfully (for us) he will be permanently moving back to Northumberland. At his final Monday face-to-face session this week we presented Tim with an engraved Roehampton Club glass tankard to thank him for his service and support of our bridge section. He will be missed.
However, Tim will still be providing bridge lessons online and I give below a complete overview of all our teaching provision going forward.
Classes resuming in the autumn
Monday evenings (F2F) – 10 sessions at the Club run by Niall Igoe, as an Intermediate Course.
Start date 11th September, with a break on 23rd October for half term.
Tuesday evenings (online) – 10 sessions online run by Tim Chanter, as a Refresher Course.
Start date 12th September, with a break on 24th October for half term.
Tim and Niall will co-ordinate lesson topics to have a minimum of overlap and communicate details in due course.
Tuesday evenings (F2F) – new beginners’ class at the Club, providing there is enough interest. Teacher tba.
Wednesday mornings (F2F) – Niall Igoe will be resuming his one-off lessons starting 6th September (he has one more session on 5th July).
Please book all courses with the team at Reception – we will advertise when bookings are available for the autumn courses.
Ongoing Learning / Supervised Play Sessions – available now and on an ongoing basis
Monday evenings (F2F) – Ron Wood will run four supervised play sessions starting next week at 7pm (3rd July). With sufficient interest, this may be extended through the summer.
Tuesday afternoons (F2F) – Loulou and Arnold continue their long-running and popular Supervised Play sessions. (There will be a break in the summer so last session this term is 11th July and sessions resume 12th September).
With Tim online and jointly with Richmond Bridge Club
Tuesday mornings – Refresh and Practice – a mini lesson followed by 12 boards of supervised play on the relevant topic.
Wednesday and Friday mornings – Supervised Play. Random boards taken from a recent club session, so that results can be compared to a typical field.
Thursday mornings – Three Board sessions with Tim Chanter. Intermediate / Advanced analysis of three boards in detail using BBO screenshare. PS we have recently made a promotional video for this session – let Tim know if interested.

Sylvia Alexy
Roehampton Club Member 1970-2023
It is with great sadness that I share the news of the death of Honorary Member, Sylvia Alexy, who passed away on Monday 12th June 2023 at the age of 92.
Sylvia’s funeral will take place in the East Chapel at Putney Vale Crematorium on Tuesday 4th July at 10.00am.
Our sincere condolences go to her son Peter and the Alexy family at this sad time.
