Backgammon – a year in review

The backgammon section has had a good year as we returned to full live play. Congratulations to our new Club Champion, Tony Taylor, who defeated Simon Edwards in the final. The Teatime Backgammon trophy was won by Jeanette Burn who beat Jurgen Schuhmacher in the final of that event.

We hold an annual backgammon/golf match against the RAC and this year we were the hosts. Roehampton won at both games and were very comfortable victors on the day.

We also run an internal backgammon/croquet event which is great fun. This year’s winners were Peter Bonnor-Moris and Trevor Campbell.

The London Clubs League season is now under way once more and after last season’s series of friendlies it is good to get back to fully competitive matches. Home House have dropped out of the league due to financial problems caused by COVID but the other nine clubs are up and running.

Hurlingham always host a season opening event in October which is a very social and well-attended occasion. This year we had two Roehampton Club successes: Chris Bray won the main competition and Linda Major won the Last Chance. At a National level Chris has retained his number one UK ranking, but only just!

Our main event of the year is our Mulled Wine and Mince Pies Backgammon evening, held in December, where we invite members of other London League Clubs to join us for some festive food and backgammon. Chris Bray always does a short lecture and this year’s ‘Cheating at Mind Games’ was highly topical and well received. We had fifty-five attendees which was excellent. The attached photo shows some of them in action.

We are now accepting entries for the Winter Knockout Tournament which runs from January to March.

In early 2023 we will be running an online beginners course with the aim of bringing new players into the game. Details of the course will be published in the New Year.
