Art Palette

Fellow Art Group Members,

Richard has asked me to write this week’s submission while he’s away.

31st August was the 32nd anniversary of the inaugural meeting of the Art Group chaired by Samuel Bieber. We have come a long way since its inception. I have decided to compile a short history of the Art Group with Keith Tottem’s help before the details get lost in the mists of time. Keith was Chair for ten years or so before I took over. If you have information you think would be useful, please email artgroup@roehamptonclub.co.uk

Art Classes are more popular than ever before, and many classes are now full. We have capped the numbers in the beginners class to allow Kathy to give more individual help to newcomers.

There is a new simplified entry process to lectures which will reduce queues and delay. From now on any member of the Club who wishes to attend must also be a member of the Art Group. If not already on our Art Group Member list, you will be able to sign up at the door. You can continue to bring guests who are not members of the Club and pay at the door as before.

Art Group Membership:

From September 2023, Club members wishing to attend lectures or attend Art classes must be Art Group Members.

For those joining the Art Group this autumn, the cost for the remainder of the year is £10, reverting to £20 for 2023. For six lectures, this represents the best value in the Club!

Next Art Lecture – Dazzling Dufy: invitation to a luminous feast with Raul Dufy

Lecture by Mary Alexander

8pm, Tuesday 19th September

Raoul Dufy (1877–1953) was a polymath and key player in twentieth century art, design, literary and musical circles in Paris. His charismatic personality, wit and curiosity about the world was infectious. Dufy’s imagination and technical virtuosity – across a range of media including painting, murals, book illustration, textiles and fashion, ceramics and theatrical set design defy conventional art historical categorisation. Dufy is widely known in France, Japan and the USA today but less so in the UK. We will explore his magical world and ask … why?

As an experienced freelance speaker, Mary lectures regularly for The Arts Society throughout the UK and abroad. She also contributes articles to magazines, newspapers and professional journals.
