Jacqueline is an art historian and freelance lecturer for the V&A, the RA and The Arts Society. She runs residential courses in Andalucia, Spain in the art and culture of the region.

Reading Room Exhibition in March – Acrylics

This month nine members of the Art Group have come together to illustrate the versatility of acrylic paints.

Compared with oil paints, acrylic resin is a relatively recent invention based on the pioneering work by German chemist Dr Otto Rohm in the 1940s. In the 50s and 60s, this was then applied to artists’ paints which led to highly successful experimentation by Abstract Expressionists Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Robert Motherwell and Barnett Newman, Pop Artists Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, and British painters Bridget Riley and David Hockney.

In this small exhibition there are examples of acrylic paints used on paper, canvas, canvas board and plywood. Acrylics can be applied to many surfaces. Techniques here illustrate styles that vary from hard edges to soft watercolour effects, wet and dry brushwork, palette knife application and layering.

Unlike oil paints, acrylics are water based and dry rapidly. Importantly for painters, acrylics are non-toxic, easy to blend, and for the Roehampton Club Art Group there’s the ability to take away your work at the end of a class.
