Chief Executive’s Message

Dear Member,

Clubhouse Refurbishment Project

Thank you for your patience with the disruption in the Clubhouse while the refurbishment project continues. Good progress is being made internally with configuration of the new rooms. The Garden Room Bar is functioning well with staff taking orders for Members in the Club Café midweek and for families in the Club Café and adults in the Bridge Room at weekends.

I would like to thank the Bridge Section for their co-operation in making this temporary arrangement work using their room.

Unfortunately, we are still awaiting planning permission for work to start on the Outdoor Bar Terrace. We are still receiving questions from Wandsworth Planners on bio-diversity issues which we are doing our best to answer as concisely as possible to satisfy all the requirements. This has put the completion date for the Bar Terrace back at least a month meaning it is likely to be completed in June. We hope the contractor can recover the delayed time if we can secure planning permission before the end of February.

Adult Only Swimming at weekday lunchtimes in the school holidays

With more requests from adults with Juniors wanting to access the indoor swimming pool over the weekday lunchtime period during school holidays the Health Club Committee has agreed to trial removing the 12-1pm adult-only swim time over the upcoming February half term.

We will still have a lane available solely for adults to swim in at this time. Juniors with adults will be granted access to either the general lane swimming or to join the lane swimming if they meet the requirements of the lane swimming policy which is detailed here. This trial will be effective from Monday 17th February to Friday 21st February.

The adult only swim sessions on weekdays 6–9am and 8–9pm and 7-9am and 7-8pm on weekends will remain.

Team Squash League

It was great to see our best players taking on all comers in the Team Squash League last weekend.

There were thrilling matches all day with one featuring our best female player – World no 11 Satome Watanabe – playing our 2023 Club Champion Peter Marshall with Peter just winning 3-2 in games on a tie break after over an hour on court with Members applauding every point due to the high standard.

Please read more here on how our Squash section is thriving producing top female players and in Satome’s case future Olympic medal hopefuls.

Henry Patten

Following his outstanding success winning the Australian Open Men’s doubles title last month, adding to his Wimbledon title, Henry has confirmed he will be coming to the Club in June before the Queens Club Tournament to celebrate his success with Members and participate in a Q and A session. Details to follow.

Henry is currently World no 3 in the ATP Doubles rankings and he could follow in Joe Salisbury’s footsteps by becoming World No 1 by June. Fingers crossed he has a successful few months to achieve this.

Ramp and pedestrian crossing at the Club entrance

To improve safety for all Members entering and exiting the Club we have fitted a sleeping policeman and a zebra crossing to slow vehicles down. New lights shining onto the crossing will be fitted in the next few weeks. Please keep your speed down when entering the Club from Roehampton Lane.

Thank you

Lastly Kathy and I would like to thank everyone who has congratulated us on our wedding last month. We had a wonderful day and subsequent honeymoon in Australia and New Zealand. Back now to work and the much cooler UK.

Best wishes,

Marc
