Chief Executive’s Message – 13 June 2024

Dear Member,

June is always a busy month at the Club and if we can have a week of good weather, we will be able to fully appreciate the wonderful facilities we have. It’s frustrating to see the beautifully prepared grass courts sitting idle as too wet to use, Members having to wrap up warm to play on the golf course, and summer barbecues being brought inside the Clubhouse as too cold and wet in the gardens. Very frustrating for everyone concerned in the planning and organisation of events so fingers crossed we have good weather for the remainder of the month for:

Family Day – this Saturday 15th June

There are still some tickets left for the youngest members of the family to have a great time with the petting farm and other activities in the gardens this weekend

England vs Spain Croquet International – 21st to 23rd June

We are pleased to be hosting this prestigious croquet match with Roehampton Club players representing England. The match will be live streamed around the world so the Club will be on show for the three days.

Please pop over to the Croquet Pavilion to see how the best players perform when under pressure. It was good to see multi–World Champion and Member Reg Bamford going through his drills the other evening until dark on lawn 4 – even the best have to constantly practise.

First Pickleball Club Championships

The rise of pickleball at the Club continues with the success of the first Club Championships last week. Louis and Freddie oversaw the competition and details are here.

If you wish to join the group on Thursdays and Friday mornings in the ITC please sign up here

Can’t book a tee time or court online?

If you have trouble booking activities and events online, please sign up for a free, ten-minute, face-to-face session on 26th June (11am to 12pm) where Rahma and her team will give you all the answers and make sure you’re connected and don’t miss out.

Planning Application for Indoor Golf Centre (IGC) submitted

After months of hard work by our team of consultants we submitted our planning application last week for the Indoor Golf Centre. Months of toil have been expended trying to meet the stringent BREEAM and Biodiversity Net Gain targets set by Wandsworth Council for any new building over 100msq let alone being on Metropolitan Open Land. We will now finalise with the Golf Committee the design of the safety fencing on the 1st tee to protect the new build from errant golf balls. On that theme golfers must report to the Sports Shop any balls hit in error into Priory Lane, Clarence Lane, or Fairacres to maintain good relationships with our neighbours. We had a pre application meeting in April with the Planning Officer on the Bar Terrace extension and Padel and Pickleball Hub projects. We still await his report before we can progress with these projects.

Members Bar and function room projects – Member Forum 10th September 2024

As outlined at the recent AGM we are making good progress with the refurbishment design of the upstairs social areas in the Clubhouse and the Bar Terrace extension. As promised at the AGM there will be a Member Forum to run Members though the designs by DesignLSM who are working closely with the Board’s House Committee. The date earmarked for the Forum is Tuesday 10th September at 6.30pm. More details to follow.
