Interviews with Debora Drago, Deputy General Manager and Stuart Reeks, Health Club Manager

Debora Drago, Deputy General Manager

I joined Roehampton Club in summer 2022, and am responsible for all Food and Beverage facilities, events, kitchen, and housekeeping departments. I take pride in my job and therefore I strive to ensure we deliver the best service, offering and cleanliness standards to our Members.

Tell us about your career to date

Prior to my current role, I worked at The Army and Navy Club in London for seven years managing the overall Club’s operations, including Food and Beverage, Reception, Health and Safety functions as well as leading major projects on IT system changes, refurbishment projects while being involved in the club’s overall strategic planning.

Before that I worked at the Marriott Renaissance Hotel and different Resorts both in the UK and my native Italy. I studied Hospitality and Tourism, completed several courses to enhance my skills. I am also a Fellow of the Institute of Hospitality and HOSPA (Hospitality Professionals Association).

What attracted you to work at Roehampton Club?

The Club’s reputation (both in terms of facilities and leadership/management style). Being a member of CMAE (Club Management Association of Europe), we see numerous private members’ clubs, and having worked for a prestigious club in the West End I wanted to make sure that my next move would be at an equivalent or superior level for my professional development and career. Hence, I had no doubt when the opportunity arose that Roehampton Club and its management team led by Marc was the right place for me to join. Being passionate about my job and the field I am in, as well a highly self-critical person on how I operate in order to deliver to the best of my capabilities, I wanted to join a club where my skills and passion for the job were best put in action and actively contributed to the Club’s accomplishments.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

Members’ satisfaction and pride of belonging. I remember when I first joined the world of private members’ clubs, I was most fascinated by the ‘home away from home’ feeling members had. The idea of being an active part and contributing to this feeling was definitely attractive. Of course, my role comes with lots of responsibilities, and I cannot deny the excitement I have when being challenged with new projects, particularly when it involves improvements to the Club facilities and/or offering.

What are you looking to improve?

The Club is currently undergoing a major kitchen refurbishment, and in the near future the Members Bar and meeting rooms area will be refurbished too, giving the Club a great opportunity to improve the overall social aspect and Food and Beverage experience to our Members. I am looking forward to the completion of both projects as the team and I are working hard to make sure that our Members enjoy their time when using the Club facilities and the planned improvements will certainly enhance this.

Who do you find the most challenging – Members or Staff Members?!

As mentioned earlier, I am very passionate about my job and the challenges which come with it, therefore I would not be able to say that one is more challenging than the other. At times both can be challenging indeed, as I always strive for high standards and expect the same from my team, but this is the beauty of the job because I personally think that without challenges there is no real improvement both personally and professionally.

What do you see being your next role?

My aim is to be appointed CEO of a respected and well-known club, hence my current focus is to keep improving my skills, attending relevant courses and working hard toward my goals. I would like to think that my abilities and industry knowledge contribute to the success of the company I work for. Thus, I am eager to see what the future holds for me and in the meantime, I make sure that I do my best to deliver a premium service, lead, and mentor a team with the same thirst for success.

What do you do to relax away from the Club … favourite sports / other activities?

I like to stay active, working out, going for long walks in nature, exploring new places. I used to do ballet and various dance styles when I was younger, and my love for dancing has never decreased; prior to the pandemic, I started to practice new moves such as salsa and I am still trying to learn how to dance it properly.

Stuart Reeks, Health Club Manager

I am responsible for the overall management of the Health Club which includes the gym and group exercise class, swimming pools and the junior programming we offer. I have a fantastic team with great experience and knowledge that support me on delivering our programmes and ensure we are consistently delivering the best service possible. A key focus is to ensure we have a comprehensive offering to all our Members and guests while also looking to introduce new ideas and ensure our facilities remain the best in market.

My background has always been in the health and wellbeing industry.  I began working at Woking Leisure Centre as an exercise referral instructor before progressing through into personal training then onto leisure management primarily for Nuffield Health. In 2014 I wanted a change of environment and a new experience so relocated to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and managed a leisure facility. This was a fantastic learning experience as well as a great life experience. Upon my return to the UK, I continued my career initially with YMCA East Surrey then with Snap Fitness managing seven facilities.

What attracted you to work at Roehampton Club?

My initial attraction was the wide variety of sports and the quality of the facilities here at Roehampton Club. Once I looked further into the Club and met with General Manager Simon Baker, I was excited by the Club’s vision and the future development plans he mentioned.  After spending time with some of the staff here in the Health Club during the interview process, I was impressed be their passion and honesty and I very quickly decided it was a place I would like to work and continue my own personal development.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I enjoy engaging with the Members and understanding why they joined and love Roehampton Club so much. How we can develop and improve and then challenging myself and my team to continuously deliver outstanding service and a comprehensive programme that caters for all our Members and guests.

What are you looking to improve?

I want to enhance the Member experience, for all the Health Club users and guests. A home from home and a facility where all your health needs can be met.

Who do you find the most challenging – Members or Staff Members?!

I wouldn’t say one group of individuals is more challenging than the other as I enjoy the daily challenges presented from both the staff and Members.  What I do believe is that we should challenge each other to provide the best environment, facilities, and opportunities for everyone to enjoy.

What do you see being your next role?

I have always swayed back and forth between a dream of owning my own gym to continue to climb the management ladder and becoming the General Manager of a health and wellbeing facility. I thoroughly enjoyed my time working in the middle east and I enjoy the sunshine so potentially a job in a warmer climate could be next.

What do you do to relax away from the Club … favourite sports / other activities?

Away from work I have two Blue Roan Cocker Spaniels who love nothing more than a wet and muddy walk or a snuggle up on the sofa. I have always had a love for football, and I was very fortunate to play to a good standard both during and after my school years. My passion for football has continued and although the knees have long given up on me, I still enjoying watching a game either on TV or live. In recent years I have developed a love for golf which is something I want to develop and then gain an official handicap this year. I am also a member of Guards Polo Club so when work allows, I enjoy nothing more than watching the polo with friends or family, just don’t ask me about the rules of polo as I don’t have a clue!
