Finally on Monday of this week, I was able to play without threat of rain. Amazingly after such a series of downpours leading up to the weekend, the Gold Cup and the Centenary Putter were played without need for rain gear. Indeed, on Monday morning, the course seemed to have stood up well to its intensive use over the weekend.

In the middle of last week, we played a yellow ball team Stableford competition and despite the adverse weather forecast, 27 players joined in. Scoring was not very good but one team of three achieved a total of more than 100 points. Congratulations to Michael Godfrey, Clive Nicholson and Chris Cowan with 103 Points. The runners-up were Nick Pack, Nigel Karmel and Bill Phelan, with 99 Points.

On the following day we were due to play our opening fixture of the season away at Surbiton. Unfortunately, it had to be called off as their course was unplayable due to the wet and muddy conditions. Now our first match is due to take place at the RAC at Epsom on 17 April.

Yesterday we held a team Stableford competition with those entered able to put in a final card for the Winter Eclectic competition. The promise of an immaculate course prepared for the Gold Cup lured 29 competitors who enjoyed playing without the imminent threat of rain. A combination of some burgeoning rough, muddy lies around the greens and slick putting surfaces made scoring more difficult than expected.

A team of Duncan Christie-Miller, Hassan Dajani and Brian Hall achieved a creditable 82 points They were followed home by a team of David Bouch, James Grey and Simon Lucas with 79 points. Congratulations to the winners!

As advertised, this was the concluding round for the seniors winter eclectic competition. Despite Ian Taylor-Restell starting the day well in the lead, he only just hung on to win against late challenges from David Bouch and Gilbert Ellacombe.

The final results were:
Ian Taylor-Restell nett 51
David Bouch nett 52
Gilbert Ellacombe nett 52
Ev Schenk nett 53
David Paterson leading a group on nett 54

Congratulations to all the winners. And don’t forget to enter the Summer Eclectic competition which starts with the Grail on 26 April.
