Bridge Blog

We held a very pleasant drinks reception last Monday following the duplicate, to say goodbye and thank you to Tristan McIlroy (Operations Manager for games and golf) who will be leaving the Roehampton club in September and to Paul Mendelson our Bridge Professional, who is moving to South Africa on a semi- permanent basis (although, we hope Paul will be able to do the occasional Friday when he is back in the UK from time to time).

Tristan has been a tremendous support to our bridge section over the years with a wonderful positive and helpful attitude. Paul needs no introduction from me as many of us have had the benefit of his bridge lessons over the years and we all know what an inspirational and excellent teacher he is. They will both be missed.

We presented Paul and Tristan with a set of personalised golf balls each to show our appreciation.

I am pleased to say that Louis Laville who has been working alongside Tristan will be supporting our section as part of his role as Golf and Games Manager and the committee look forward to working with Louis.

Junior Championships

Congratulations to Will Battersby who was part of the Under 16 Junior team winning Silver at the recent Junior European Championships held in the Netherlands. Well done to them all!

Friendly Match vs RAC Woodcote, 21st July – Match report Peter Bonnor-Moris

The team of Peter and Henryka Bonnor-Moris, Kate Blake, Sue Norgate, Malcolm Bricknell, Paul Ambrus, and Sally and Danny Gesua played away against RAC Woodcote. Despite the hot weather the country club of the RAC and the golf course were looking beautiful. We played bridge in the Derby Room, a splendid spacious room with magnificent views, which I was told was where Queen Victoria was entertained on her way to the races at Epsom.

The match was played in a friendly competitive spirit and Roehampton Club put in a very solid performance. We led throughout the match, at half time we were 30 IMPs up and we finished by winning with a comfortable margin of 58 IMPs. A large swing in our favour came from the opposition bidding 5H one down over our bid of 5D whereas our team bid and made 4H vulnerable. Other large swings in our favour typically came from us bidding and making games which the opposition either didn’t make or didn’t bid. The RAC’s hospitality as usual was excellent and complimented a most enjoyable afternoon and evening.
