Sports Shop Newsletter

As we move closer to the much-anticipated announcement on Monday 22nd for our roadmap out of lockdown we are all very excited for our return to the Club. It has been fantastic to see Roehampton Club’s Cameron Norrie and Joe Salisbury in the Australian Open, as Joe reaches the semi-finals in both the men’s and mixed doubles. He has a mouth-watering tie against fellow Brit, Jamie Murray, in the men’s doubles tomorrow morning – we all have our fingers crossed and alarms set for the 2am start! The indoor golf studio refurbishment is in full flow and I am excited to share the finished product in the coming weeks.

Tennis with Tilly – Roehampton Club’s own, shining in Australia

During lockdown number three, there is nothing quite like waking up to the Australian Open – a pleasant change from daily statistics, cold weather fronts and the thought of facing another day of home schooling! As we head into the second week of the tournament, we look back on what has been a roller-coaster first week for British tennis, particularly for two Roehampton Club stars; Joe Salisbury and Cameron Norrie.

World Doubles number 3, Joe Salisbury, is firmly on the way to defending his men’s doubles title with his American partner, Rajeev Ram. With a straight set win in the quarter finals, Salisbury and Ram face Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares in the semi-finals tomorrow, this is certainly set to be a fantastic match that starts at 2am UK time – set your alarms!

This morning Joe also progressed to the semi-finals of the mixed doubles with American Desirae Krawczyk. They won 6-3, 6-4 against the pairing of Britain’s Neal Skupski and Slovenia’s Andreja Klepac at the Margaret Court Arena.

It is fantastic to see Joe having a great Australian Open, I am sure we will all be watching his progress closely with our fingers crossed!

Having got past both the British number one Dan Evans, Cam Norrie reached the third round of a Grand Slam for a second time in his career, where he then faced second seed Rafa Nadal. Despite a loss in straight sets, Cam certainly gave all time legend Nadal a run for his money, with Rafa suggesting his opponent can push into the top thirty and gaining a seed himself at a Grand Slam at some point in the future.

The right racket for you …

At the top level of tennis, margins are so small the finest players must use a racket they trust to perform at their best. Interestingly, Cam Norrie plays with the Babolat Control (which is no longer on the market), painted to look like the Babolat Pure Strike. The Babolat Pure Strike comes in a series of weights and a couple of different head sizes and string patterns.

It is vital to get the right weight when buying a tennis racket. If you buy a racket that is too heavy, inevitably you will end up with an injury and, much to people’s surprise, the same goes if you buy a racket that is too light! This is something you will not necessarily notice immediately when you pick a racket up, but more so after playing with it for a period of time which is why we strongly advise you try a racket out first before buying.

The head size is also a vital factor to consider, a bigger head size will offer more power whilst a smaller head size will offer more control. A larger head will also offer a more prominent sweet spot, allowing more margin for error – particularly useful if you are perhaps not as quick on your feet as you once used to be!

We will have a demo system in place waiting for you when the Sports Shop reopens where you can try a selection of rackets across a number of brands and Tilly will be on hand to help find the perfect racket for you. For more information or if you would like any advice on your racket, please contact tilly@roehamptonclub.co.uk

How it works:

1. Email Tilly at tilly@roehamptonclub.co.uk to discuss what string might work best for you and your game – prices start from £25
