Just under one hundred people; Members, their guests and Club
guests from West Byfleet and East India Club turned out on Thursday
evening as Roehampton Club played host to one of Snookers greatest
ever players, Steve Davis
A snooker table was built upstairs and the Roehampton Room was
transformed into a Snooker Hall for one night only.
The evening started with drinks, sponsored by Fullers, before
everyone was invited to take their place around the table. The
Snooker Chairman, Alan Patten, welcomed our guests and briefly
described the remarkable progress that the Snooker Section has made
since snooker was reintroduced to the Club in 2010. The London
Club's Knockout Cup, won by Roehampton Club in 2014, was then
presented to the Captain, David Cowpe, and his winning team.
The snooker display began with Steve Davis playing three frames
against our friendly professional Martin O'Donnell, refereed by
star referee Michaela Tabb. The atmosphere was light-hearted with
plenty of banter and fighting talk from Steve and Martin, but there
was some smart snooker and Steve made brilliant breaks of fifty and
sixty to win the final frame and remind everyone why he is a six
time World Champion.
After an excellent supper Steve demonstrated some trick shots,
with a helping hand from his youthful assistant from the audience
James, aged 10, who clearly knew his way around a snooker table. In
between the snooker Steve shared humorous stories from his time on
the snooker circuit, a few particularly memorable ones about ex
professional snooker player 'Big Bill' Werbeniuk. This was
followed by a Question and Answer session, hosted by Michaela.
Steve and Michaela answered every question thrown at them and
everyone their enjoyed an insight into the sport of snooker at its
highest level. Both Steve and Michaela were great fun and generous
with their time, not leaving until nearly midnight and being
photographed and chatting with everyone who asked.
